Snake Identification?

So, yeah. I live sort of in a foresty area.. and we often find wild snakes around our yard. Earlier this year i've seen one or two black rat snakes... But, anyway, my dad saw this one out in the yard and called me out to see it. he thought it was venomous, but i'm pretty sure it isn't.. Doesn't look like any of the venomous species that live in this area. I'm really not sure what kind this is though.. Anyone here know what kind it is? It's brownish greyish with a reddish orange belly. Really pretty, but i haven't seen one like it before. It looked like it was about 3 feet long, if you can't tell by the pics. He was slithering around along the front of our house, and me and dad were just following him around watching him(and i got the camera and got some pics) until he went off into the backyard.

What a great looking snake! I think the test for a water snake is you pick it up and if it flings massive quantities of super-foul smelling musk, then it's a water snake. Please report back.

Nah, i didn't try to pick it up.. lol. After i got some pics and it crawled off into the backyard i just let it be. And now he's probably gone back in one of the creeks behind our yard. He was pretty, though. There isn't really any standing water around our front yard though, so i wonder what he was doing up there. Dad first noticed him because our cat was messing with him.

Since our neighborhood is sort of in the woods, we get snakes in our yard now and then.. There was a big black rat snake living under some steps behind our house.. i don't know if he's still staying there, though. I haven't seen him in awhile.. We also have loads of turtles and frogs(at the right time of year), and sometimes turtles. Last week we saw a Box Turtle walking across our backyard. And today when i was coming in from watching the snake, i saw a little skink run into our garage... Herps all over the place. :)

Maybe he was trying to figure out how to work the water spigot/hose. :grin01:
