I caught a 5-6 ft speckled kingsnake ( sorry to post this on a cornsnake forum, but this could endanger my corns aswell!!!!) , I put him in a 55 gal tank abou 2 monthes ago. Today on the top plastic part of the tank ( black plastic part ) I noticed hundreds and hundreds of very small white bugs. I mean very very small. If you look very close you can see them move. I wiped them all off, and put him in another tank. What are these, what can I do!!!! their are thousands of them!!! please help me!!!!

Eewww! I'm by no means an expert, but it sounds like some sort of mites to me. I think snakes, just like birds, can get them. Hopefully one of the more experienced members will be able to help you with your problem and tell you what to do. The only advice I could give you is to keep this snake as far away from your corns as possible and not to handle this snake until you find out what's going on.

yea, it's mites....

that's what it sounds like to me. grossness! just put that snake back where you found it. unless a snake i find is injured i leave it where i found it, i may handle it if it is non venomous, but i do not take animals out of nature. did you have the king snake in the same enclosure as the corns? look up mites on the forum to find out ways to cure it.

The king would have eaten the corns by now if they were in the same enclosure. They are ravenous snake eaters, but you'll still have to worry about mites if they are in the same area.

mites

SpecKing, Get a 20gallon tank with the bear nessesities, a water bowl, and paper towel. Get a mite strip from the pet store. Cut a pc of strip and place it on top of the tank, with a heat lamp on the top aswel. Leave the snake in there 1- 2 days and you should see a big difference within that time. The mites will die, and the snake will be fine. If its a bad infestation you will have to change the strip once or twice, and leave the snake in there for 3-4 days. I tell people not to catch snakes in the wild, never ever bring them home if you have captive bred snake at home. If they are wild they should stay wild, your doing more harm to the snake by taking it out of their home. I do know what I am talkin about, trust me.

I think Kathy Love had written something in her book about the strips. You need to make sure that the vapors off it doesn't get too much. They had cases of their snakes being fatally poisoned off the fumes. Use caution.
