snake is really scared, and im new to this

hey everyone, I've had my corn snake for almost two weeks now. and i havent held him since i got him from the pet store he seems really scared of me, I know its normal but even when i try to touch him he turns his head around really fast to watch me Or he trys moving away really fast to get away, sometimes he even moves his head closer and closer to my hand, Does anyone have any ideas to how i could pick him up and hold him without him getting scared to death?
 
Young Corns are normally nervous to start with it could also be nervous if it's just starting to shed and the eye caps are clouded up. Best is to handle your snake once to twice a week. When it's not digesting food or in shed, and he should get more used to you.
 
Handling your new snake can be difficult if you aren't used to it. The best think to do is just pick him up! I know, easier said than done. But honestly, if you just reach in a scoop him up without hesitation, all usually goes well. I don't necessarily mean reach in fast and grab him, but rather smooth and steady motions, preferably not going straight towards his face. Try to sneak attack him when he isn't looking. Then continue to hold him until he calms down. If he squirms just let him travel hand to hand until he settles. If you put him back right away this will condition him to think that if he freaks he will get put down. And another thing, as scary as it can seem, if he does strike you, you probably wouldn't even notice. Just be confident and firm. Good luck!!!
 
hey thanks so much! i really didnt know what to do, hes such a sweetie really but he just been acting totally different since we took him home and i've read up that is normal for snakes, Thanks again for the help :)
 
yes, hes an adult, and he just got done shedding friday night...i got to see him shed and everything it was really amazing. and its funny because the pet store thought somethin was wrong with him because he wasnt eating when in truth he was gonna be shedding.
