Snake 'looking outside' of viv?

Hi all,

I have noticed that my corn has been 'looking outside' of his viv quite often lately, does anyone else's do the same?

I'm not too concerned anyway - maybe he's just getting more curious!

How often do you handle him? He may be tired of the same things everytime. Try to handle more, let him explore (but be careful with possibly escapes, of course), change the position of things at the terrarium, add new things...

Should be boring stay in a box and see the same things all day long lol

Yeah he always looks like he wants to come and play now! I handle him about 3 times a week between feeding, and I rearrage his 'furniture' probably every 4 to 6 weeks - occasionally swapping things out when I can :)

so he's just very curious hahahha...

It's cool to have a snake like yours, some of them don't even get out of the hide when there's someone nearby the viv

Rufus always arranges himself in his "Hide Spots" but leaves his little head sticking out so he can see what's going on. The minute I come into the room he becomes active. He'll climb up on his favorite branches and just sit an look at me through the glass. If I go an open the door he will actually crawl out into my hands. If I ignore him and go about my business he will eventually go back into one of his Hides.

I believe he really likes to be handled and likes to come out. I play with him some every day, with the exception of after eating. I have even placed him on a table top before, walked to the other side of the table and he follows my movements and will turn and come towards me.

If he didn't like being handled what would explain these activities?

I think snakes are no different than any other animal. They grow to like us and accept us and even want to be with us. And my guess would be that it occurs more often or not depending on whether you handle your snake a lot or rarely ever. It only makes sense that if a snake is handled and taken out of his cage frequently he will be more "Sociable" than a snake that is ignored. In fact it seems to me that the ones that are ignored, or rarely handled are the ones that tend to be scared and Bitey.

So maybe your snake is trying to tell you - "Hey, I'm over here. Come play with me."

Mine does that all the time except when digesting or in shed when he stays hidden. Some of it I interpret as ambush hunting, waiting for a mouse to walk past the snakey. Other times he comes out when I talk to him. That I definitely see as "let's play". On days he can be handled I always do even if it is just for a short while.

They are all different but with similarities. They are curious and I dare say intelligent in their own snakey ways. They definitely can both see and hear even if smell is their primary sense. What you describe is a normal behavior. The more you observe the more your snake will teach you its "language".

All of mine will look outside of their containers. My adult male snow will lay with his head propped up on the litter dam and stay there for hours sometimes before moving, especially if I'm folding clothes. My yearling amel will come out of her box and prop herself up on a rock and watch me as I sit at my desk.

The sunglow and tessara pop out from under their paper towels to watch me as I move around in the quarantine area. Then again I think the sunglow is just thinking I am bringing her food, she is a voracious eater and will usually take the pinkie right from my hand and wiggle to the corner to eat it.

At just past 2 months old, I've seen mine peeking out of his hide also. But when he sees I'm watching he ducks back in to 'hide'. He's still very nervous and flighty and doesn't want to be held. Tonight was his feeding night, but didn't want any part of eating that pinkie. So for the 2nd time into the paper bag with the pinkie he went. And it worked again! As long as I can keep him going I think he'll learn to relax a bit more. I'm just happy he ate.

I'm so glad all he needs is a paper bag for a little privacy and security. He will learn to relax. He's still a little guy and a lot of them are flighty at that stage. Mine was for sure.

I think it is because they hope of food.. whenever I am around the snake cages, they all perk up and is like oh really? food time?? is it? lol hungry brats!
