Snake not drinking.

Can anyone tell me is it unusual for a snake not to drink.I havent seen it drink since I got and am worried about it dehydrating.Should I mist the cage?
Thanks.
Richie.

I only saw my snake drink once in the 7 months I had him, and I only saw it because I happened to be holding him at the time and he was drinking *my* water (I know, probably not the best thing for him to do, but its not like I invited him to it). They don't drink a lot, and they probably do it at night when no one is looking.

I've heard that corns don't need a whole lot of humidity, and as long as the cage isn't dry as a bone, you should be fine. When they go into the blue stage, you could mist them then, or just give them a moist hide (a bit of spagum (don't know how to spell that?) moss, not too wet, in an old cream cheese container or something with a hole in it).

I wouldn't worry about his water. I've had my first snake for over a year and I've only seen him drink once (when I was holding him) I wouldn't worry about misting him either unless he's having trouble shedding. I seem to have kind of bad luck that way. Both my snakes have problems shedding. Has he shed yet?

well, with me, i have never misted any of their viv's, have wood chippings, and have no moist hides whatsoever, and none of them have had trouble shedding, nor have i had one of them regurge, i bath them once a week, and also put vitamins in their water but i suffer with insomnia, so im up for the majority of the night and every now and then i turn on my light to take a look at what mine are doing, and 7/10 i catch one of them drinking, they do tend to drink when no ones looking :) sneaky little things.

That makes sense. How do you bath them Missy? Mine hate the water but I hate having to assist them in shedding their tails and I'm scared that sometime they're not going to shed their eye caps. Thats much more delicate an opperation than I care to tackle.

yeah i understand about the eye caps too, even the tails i do not like to tackle, as if they leave a tiny bit on the tip, its dies and falls off and does not grow back, unfortunately my female has had that, tried to get it off for her but it just didnt happen, it dont show though, it is seriously a tiny tiny bit.

the bathing, pretty straight forward really, fill the bath with a few inches of water, not too much, just so it comes up right before it covers the snake, and only lukewarm. what feels warm to you, feels boiling to the snake, so stick your elbows in the water to test it, it should feel near enough cold to you, but for the snake it will be perfect. then just pop the snake in, at first mine do go a bit nuts and they swim about a bit, but then they rest and justchill in the water, i get some cigarettes and a book and sit in there on the toilet seat with them for abot 30mins to an hour. and thats that. all done. then i spray the bath with disinfectant (i have one that kills salmonella) to prevent anything being passed from the snake to us, or from us to the snake.
good luck, its so cute to watch them swimming about. lol.

That long? i take 5 or 10 minutes or so.

Can you give a temperature for the water. I used what felt just a bit cold to my hands. Still to warm?

you dont always have to bath them that long, the main thing is they are soaking up some water. i dont actually get temperatures for the water, no. if they go crazy and do not calm down then you have it too warm, but if they do calm down after a bit then its fine. use your elbows, it will feel slightly cold but not stone cold, you know, just a tad warm but mostly cold. am i making any sense? i know what i mean. lol.
:)

thanks thats certainly helpful. I just got one and the people taking care of it originally didn't know about the tail thing. It was almost falling off. I just saved it but I'd rather not take a chance on that happening again. :)

no problem gisele
good luck with them :)
the better you take care of them, the longer they'll stay with you

richie_irl, your snake will drink when its out and about, usally when you are sleping. Cornsnakes are more active at night to early morning, usally when we are all asleep.

well, 1 1/2 years ive had mine, i have only seen him drink wen i "bathed" him :p he sat ther and gulped it down, the water was tepid, not cold, so if you are really worried, try raise the temp of the water, NOT hot ! just, slightly warm. seeming the water is normally warm where they stay or so i should imagine, it would be more natural.and spraying every now and then is fine, it just simulates the odd rain shower, u could also effectivley drench the tank, to an extent, not making puddles, but all nice and damp, to make it seem like very heavy showers. all to make it seem very natural, but i would also make the water u spray tepid, spraying a snake with coldl water,. makes it run (not litrally) and hide, but with warm, it takes to it a bit calmer

this is my opinion on this subject, your choice whether you follow it or not, :p

id just like to add this aswell, my snake came out looking for a drink at around 11 am this morning, and i sat and watched him drink, he drunk LOADS so they probably drink so much that they dont need to drink often, just thought id tell u to stop ya worrying, if u are worrying, :D

stuart, what do you mean bath him. Iv never had to bath a snake and Iv had lots. If my snake is dirty all I do is let them be, how dirty can a snake really get. All my snakes bath themselfs in their drinking water, when I see that I change the water.

it was more or a rookie move, i still dont know y it done it, but it seemed loving at the time. :D it was all for the good in the end tho, cos he drank the water :D

I have not yet seen my little girl drink, I have a rough green, I have yet to see eat or drink. But yet I have to clean the cage :) so I guess they are just shy about it. :) Atleast mine are.

Gisele I find it odd that my corn snake only drinks water when i'm holding him. I thought I was the only person with this situation.
