snake shed

My snake shed two days ago and left about 4 inches of skin on the tail. He is not too keen to me trying to pull it off for him. How can I help him out to get it all off or should I wait a few more days and see if it comes off on it's own?

this is the way I do it:
I take a plastic animal cage, such as the Kritter Keepers, of an appropriate size. Put about one inch of warm water in the bottom. Then put several paper towels in on top of the water. Put the snake in there. Then put a few dripping wet paper towels on top of the snake. Leave the snake in there for about 30 minutes. Check to see if there is any shed skin stuck. If so, put the snake back in for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary. I have also heard of people using small towels. The beauty of paper towels is that you can just throw them away. Make sure the kritter keeper is securely closed to prevent escapes!

The same thing happened to mine, so I just soaked paper towels, held her in my hand and soaked her tail for a bit, and then let her just crawl the rest of the way thru. The skin finished shedding like that.

You really shouldn't have any problems with shedding if the humidity is at a proper level, right? My snake just soaked itself in the water bowl and its skin was wrapped around the bowl.

I think even if the humidity is correct, the tail is a harder area to shed and having a little bit left on the tip is pretty common.

When this happened to my snake as a hatchling, I gently pinched the tail between my fingers and just let him crawl through like he would. This takes the skin off more naturally and ensures the tail doesnt break.

thanks

Thanks everyone. Drake the snake will be having a little trip to the snake spa tonight for a soaking.

Hi Lynne,

When it happened to me, I thought I had gotten it all off. But, when I put SneakySnake back in his tank, he was slithering across the bottom, with the last 2 inches of his tail sticking straight up in the air, (90° to the bottom of the tank). Looked really dumb, and wrong. So I got him back out to take another look, apparently in those couple of minutes, he had gotton it, "restarted", as soon as I got ahold of him, he slid right on through. Boy were we both proud and relieved. Good Luck.

P.S. Hold gentle, but a little snug.
