Snake Size?

Hi there,
I just brought my new boy home and posted some pics in the photo gallery and on my FB. One of my friends who has corn snake experience asked me how old he is. He was hatched in June '09 as per the pet store and he has been eating Pinkies 1x a week. He is fairly long, but not very large around. Maybe the size of my ring finger (I have very small hands) Is this normal for an 8 month old snake? Or should he be bigger? Or is this dependant on the snake itself and not on when he was born?

Thanks
Amanda

From reading around here it sounds like size is dependant on the snake, age, and how often they eat. A (possibly) better representation of his size may be weight (in grams). I had a snake that was 7 grams. The one I have now is the same age (or nearly so) and is 10 grams. He is twice the size of the forst one but still very small.

I do have a scale, but as I just got him I didn't want to pick him up to weigh him and stress him out. They had been feeding him 1 pinkey 1x a week, which he was eating like a champ unless he was in blue or shedding.

That sounds like a good size to me. My snakes are both June '09 hatchlings and they are quite a bit smaller. One was fed every two weeks and she is about 15 inches long and weighs 12 grams. The other one was only fed every month and he is only 5.5 grams and not nearly as long. I kind of wish I'd known better and got one from a breeder rather than a store, but at least they eat well now. :)

Oh wow Katie, that is so tiny! Ya I would figure he's about 15 inches long or so. Haven't had a chance to measure or weigh him yet as I just got him. But I'll do that next week once he's settled in.

Sounds about right.

I have four '09s still with me who were problem feeders for months. They're chowing down like champs now, but they're smaller than yours. Size depends on a range of factors, including how long it took them to become regular eaters, genetics and individual metabolism.

Once you get to weigh your snake, you'll have a better idea what it should be eating. The Munson plan is a good feeding guideline to follow. I would suggest if it is eating pinkies, that you can feed it a pinky every 5 days as opposed to 7 days. 7 days is more of a maintainence diet.

Pet stores usually feed for maintenance only so its hard to say how big he should be.

I recently went back to the store I bought our corn from and they still had the same snakes there from when I bought him in Nov. They are half his size..they still look really really tiny (I assume they are 09's too and likely hatched at the same time) It was strange holding the anery they had as I remember thinking I'd love to have him but my son picked one of the snows instead.

Thanks guys. I will feed him according to the Munson Plan, and do plan on feeding at 5 days instead of 7. I also think he may be on to double pinks, but I will determine that by his weight. I'll keep you posted. thanks for the info.
