Snakes and Cats

Ok I know that if a snake escapes cats are very dangerous to them but as I am looking to get a little kitten today I wanted to see if anyone had any negative experiences with cats and snakes.

So far I havent... My one cat absolutely loves to sit and watch the snake move around its tank, and doesnt like to have too much to do with them other than that. Even when I take em out, they stay atleast 4 feet away (without any influence from me, they just do it!).
I did let the them "meet" when I 1st got the girls, and from that second on they gave em thier distance. Maybe that took away the curiosity and introduced a not-so-inviting smell.

My cat can only see my burm who's cage is closest to the floor. Sometimes I think they have different intentions: =)

Generally, I try to keep my cat locked in a separate room when I have the snakes out, hehe...

My cats love to watch the snake, I have four cats. Kin, my boy, is a scaredy and stays away. Emily and Angel like to sit and watch carefully. Now Carrie, she's a bit of a different story. Carrie bats at the tank. Carrie watches for hours, very intently. Carrie screams at me in the same voice she uses when she wants food. She knows when the snake is out, and SCREAMS at the door to get in. I am convinced she wishes to eat him. I think it's because of how exotic his smell is to her. Now, if he got out, I think they would all run. BUT, it serves as a good reminder to keep his cage locked up tight. Honestly, I think it wouldn't be a problem to introduce a snake and a kitten, but of course don't leave them together unattended. We keep the cats out of Kaa's room now, because I don't want to take any chances.

My kitty is a good girl. She loves to watch them, and will occasionally raise a paw as if to swipe at one if I have it out but she knows it's not allowed and I can just say uh-uh to her and she stops. I can't imagine how tempting a hatchling must look from a cat's point of view, like a wiggly fat piece of string. The bigger snakes she has a little more respect for, having been lunged at once seems to have taught her a lesson. She does love to sit on top of screen with the glass vivs. She has alerted me to lost snakes and helped me find them without ever hurting one yet.
Cassandra that photo is just begging for a lolcat caption!

I'm not sure about that. I think they both want to eat eachother! ;)

My kitty loves watching the snakes. It provides her with a bit of entertainment around the house. If your snakes are small and got out, a cat could potentially harm them, but an sub-adult corn could more than scare off the average kitten. In all honesty, I've had small snakes escape. In one case, my cat actually FOUND the snake, and she didn't do any damage to them.

Beautiful kitty, Jenni. I'll have to wait until Merlin departs this world before getting another cat. He simply cannot tolorate them around.

At one time last year I had my sisters cats and my cats in the house (12 cats), for about a month other then watching and an occasional swipe, I've had no problems.

I would have to admit that while normally my cats and snakes get along fine, I have lost a snake to my cats, One got escaped and the cat found it. :( all I found was the middle third of the poor snake :( I guess it was bound to happen. all in all I am pretty luck considering the amount of snakes I keep and have kept.

Two of my kitties completely ignore all my snakes, and the other one loves to sit on top of Storis cage, but doesn't really bother her at all. Stori just ignores him and he her.
Good luck getting a kitten!

I had a cat/snake accident about a year and a half ago. My cat had pushed out the tub of my female bairdi and bit her on her head and half way down her body. I got home just in time (I was only gone for 20 minutes) to save my poor girl. She will always have scars on her, and has other permanent damage. Her jaw is a weird shape (probably got broken and healed weird) and she can no longer eat appropriate sized prey. I have to feed her to smaller food items. But, she is still alive and healthy, albeit small for her age.

Just be careful! I now take extra precautions to make sure the snake tubs are secure. All my cat did was paw at the bin and pull it out enough so that the snake would come out.

Oh, that lil' silvery kitty is SO cute! That is almost exactly what my Carrie looks like, but Carrie's head is more angular. She/He's a cutie!

My 16 year old cat hasn't even noticed my snake. I got her as a hatchling in September. He doesn't even seem to notice when I am holding her. He's not the sharpest claw on the cat.

My kitty "Sadie" loves to watch "Fang" 5' female snow. She just can't figure out why she can't get her by batting the bottom of the Viv! She doesn't seem at all excited by the new baby's we just got, and yes thats 3 corns we got in a month. I hope this ends soon as I am already eyeing up a couple more females. I figure "Tigger" could service three ladies and all those babies would be so cool as we could have first picks.

The cats that we have are indoor/outdoor cats and we live in a fairly deserty area. They come in contact with wild snakes all the time and we very frequently find half eaten bodies on our doorstep. That noted we keep the snake securly contained and away from them. Our youngest cat however had a cow when she finanlly realized we were keeping one as a pet. We kept an eye on her but she would sit and stare at the cage forever and paw at the corner of it, then we would sneak up on her and tap her in the back and she would spring 3 feet in the air and run away, just to sneak back in a few seconds to stare again. It is so cute! After staring at the cage for awhile she is also leary of things outside the cage that look "snake-like". Things like telephone cords and power cords she would jump at when she saw it, then sneak up on it and paw it until she was sure it was "dead", then she would move on after she felt comfortable. I thought about letting them meet so that our cat wouldn't be afraid anymore but we changed our minds. We don't want her happening upon a rattler in the wild and dying because she thinks it isn't a threat. Sorry for the ramble, but as for advice: I think that if you live in a suburban area or have indoor cats you should be just fine. Just no unsupervised contact of course. Good luck and please post a pic when you get a kitten!!

CATS

I have three cats, but the only one that appears to give a rats about the snake is the one that has no eyes to speak of... she loves to hover when I am feeding the snake. But she hasnt tried to do anything more than sniff around the bucket. Now the fish tank is different. I have caught all my cats at one time or another "fishing" in the tank. Too bad the fish are oscars...I am assuming there have been at least a few sore paws that I havent caught wind of...

Hmm, when I would "geckosit" my cat would think the viv was a fish tank and sit there expecting fish, but she eventualy lost interest.
