snakes and dogs?

First time Corn Owner
I'm a new snake owner (two weeks) and also have two dogs. I've been keeping the dogs out of the office (snakes room) when I take my snake out.

How do others handle these two pets. I'm guessing snakes would definately see dogs as predators and freak out. Likewise, my dogs will attack anything moving that is not another dog...

just wondering...
 
Yes, dogs are natural predators of snakes, but then again, so are people. I believe that snakes can become acclimated to the presence of dogs just as they can to us. Neither my dog's presence nor my cat's causes alarm in my snakes. However, both dog and cat are pretty mellow. You could train your dogs not to bother the snake, but I would always be extra vigilant when the two are together.
 
My dogs, cats, and snakes co-exist quite nicely. I do try to keep them away from each other. The snakes aren't particularly bothered, but the cat finds them irresistible, and the dog's, despite being trained off snakes, want to check them out anyway. I guess rattlesnakes aren't the same as YOUR snake. They seem to know the difference.
 
We have three dogs and they just leave the room when we bring the snakes out. They will look in at them from the doorway, but I think they just know to leave the snakes alone. :) L
 
My 2 dogs are not particularly interested in the snakes. I wouldn't leave them alone together, but it's no problem to sit on the couch handling a snake with a dog lying beside me. :)
 
My dog is a trained snake killer, so it would never work out for me. I never thought I'd own a snake, and wasn't a big fan of always stepping on them when I was walking through the woods so I trained Princess to seek and destroy. So probaby wouldn't be a good idea to let her around my corn, LOL.
 
Bo has walked by my snake vivs countless times and could care less. I usually refrain from handling the snakes until he's laying around the house, crapped out (which is around 80 percent of the time, anyhow); but if he's active/playful, I won't attempt handling snakes in front of him.

Animal risk management, I guess.

My dog doesn't bother about the snakes. The man who runs my local reptile shop says his dog won't bother about anything apart from tortoises. It hides behind the sofa when they are out. The lizards, snakes and even young aligators don't bother it in the slightest.
 
Dogs need to know their boundaries. My dog knows he can sit and look at my snakes when I am holding them, but he knows he doesn't come near the snake, same with my hamster, bird, cat, etc. I am a dog trainer, and have trained hundreds of dogs, it is actually easier then it sounds to train a dog off something. :) Be the leader and you will be fine!

You tell peeps on a corn (read; also other snakes owned by members) forum your dog is trained to destroy snakes?! :bang: :sidestep: I'm amazed you didn't get flamed the next reply immediately... or do I get something wrong?
 
My dog isn't impressed with Draco. She'll leave the room when we get him out. We made sure we made lots of fuss of Willow (the collie) when we first got our snake so she wouldn't feel jealous. We'd NEVER leave them unattended together as regardless how much you trust your pets, some instincts are stronger than any training you give.
Unfortunately, Draco seems fascinated by Willow and will try and reach to her when we hold him. I think the warm fur appeals but not in a food-related sense as he doesn't attempt to eat her! I think it would make life easier if Draco ignored the dog, but he adores her. :shrugs:

my cat is absolutely facinated by anything that moves so i have to make sure she is sleeping when apollo comes out. my old lakeland terrier was cool with him but the new one is a nutcase and would eat him. I guess it is just a matter of the personalities involved in your house. you know your animals best, but generally seperation is safest. good luck :)
 
I don't think the dog is even aware I have a snake. The cat on the other hand. . . :sidestep:

It would seem that said training was something done in the past. It sounds like SnowCorn87 had an epiphany and now has snakes as pets. Seems clear that this person is wise enough to keep this dog away from his/her pet snakes. No flaming necessary. Sounds more like a confession of past sins to me! LOL
 
I think she was just being sarcastic. I could say "my cats are trained snake killers" and it doesnt necissarilly mean i/anyone trained them to do that...lol GOSH some people take things too seriously..

Anyway

I keep my furry critters away from my snakes, only because aside from my corns, my bigger snakes could easily kill/injure some of my smaller mamals, and visa versa.
On one of the forums a guy was trying to sell off his "dog friendly" burm, after he left it alone with his pit bull and came in 10 minutes later to find the dogs legs sticking out of the burms mouth.......
