Snakes round necks: yes or no?

Wow, I'm kinda surprised at the number of "don't do it" responses. This is one of the best aspects of having pet corns, IMO, is that they can hang out with you. I have quite a few who are "neck snakes" and will hang out on my neck, in my hair, etc. for hours while I am working at the computer. I have one female who knows exactly how to get to the "hide box" on people and will head straight for a sleeve or collar to climb in. She loves to curl up on my belly inside my shirt and "bask" in the warmth.

Yep, I've been crapped on, and bitten, on occasion. But it's not like some traumatic experience that would keep me from doing it again. I also occasionally get "clawed" by the cat if she jumps on/off me, and that's much "worse" than any corn bite. :grin01: I wouldn't do this with a powerful snake but my corns don't fall into that category.
I totally agree with you Chuck. I love my corns for that main reason. They are small enough to safely hang out around necks. In my opinion, corns just don't have the strength to contstict someone. I've been squeezed a bit by my adult corn, Doug, but to me, its kind of neat to feel. Guess I'm just weird that way. I let Bobo and Skizzard crawl all over too. If they end up in my hair or around my neck, eh, so what. :shrugs:

I love having my corn around my neck! I have long hair, but I just put it up and then it allows Strider all the freedom to roam around and do as he pleases. I've let him around my neck ever since he was a little hatchling and I've never had him poop on me. Or try to constrict me. But maybe thats because hes used to it. But as to whether its a good idea or not I'd have to say it depends on your snake and its temperament. But I'm all for it!

Aidan's favorite place to hang out:

he'll stay that way forever if i let him. and he has squeezed a few times and even thought my thumb was food before....but he's not strong enough to do any damage. he'll sit there while i type away...i swear he just falls asleep there.

as far as having them hang out around my neck, i dont do that just for the fact that they take off too quick. and it's a pain when they sneak down the back of my shirt. i'll let them crawl up my shirt sleeve or hang out on my shoulders...but when they get too close to my shirt collar i pull them away.

I've let Galen's 5 foot long honduran hang around my neck and also my new 3.5 foot king. Never tried to constrict. Now IF one did start to strangle me there's always a knife close by :grin01: ... not like we are in the jungle getting attacked with no way out.

To me there's a difference between "hanging" around the neck, as in draping, and "wrapped" around the neck as in squeezing firmly to hold on. I have no problem putting corns or BP's around my neck. I never forget they are there and I make sure they don't start to make loops where they would need to tighten to feel secure.

We do have a Russian ratsnake who is very arboreal and *extremely* strong. At four feet, he's nearly as powerful as a BP of the same size, even though his body is leaner, and he's going to get bigger. He wraps firmly and is not easily pried off. I have warned my husband that he is NEVER to be a "neck snake" like the corns. I've felt that snake compress my arm and there is no way I'd let him near my neck.

I don't do it, but it's not due to any potential threat. I'm kinda OCD about germs, and my hands and arms are easier to clean immediately after handling than my neck and hair. I love my snakes, but I can't forget that they DO crawl through their own soiled aspen.

As for kissing them? No way!

Oh dear yes me too, I wash my hands 100 times a day as it is... (well I do actually have mild OCD) There is no way in this world am I going to let my snake get anywhere near my mouth!! And if it poops on me I will wash with antibacterial soap!!!

I don't see a problem with having a small snake like a corn round your neck however, at least if it does poop it's nowhere near your mouth.
depends what temperament your particular snake has I guess, and hey, can't be worse than having a parrot on your shoulder :eek1:

I wash with antibac soap after touching any part of the snake and anything in its enclosure :shrugs: But I'm with you on the mild OCD thing. I have hand cleanser next to the snake tanks.

I am trying to get hold of some of that sanitiser gel stuff, that you just rub into dry hands. I have terrible dry cracked skin between my fingers where I wash my hands too much.

So do I. Over the last week I haven't been able to bend my fingers because my knuckles are just too cracked and sore. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this.

To stay on topic, it's nice to know that some people actually encourage/enjoy having a snake around their neck. With all the "no never" responses, I was starting to wonder if I WAS being irresponsible because I do it.

I can't imagine why anyone would not want a corn snake around their neck but i'd be buggered if I'd have a really large python or boa around my neck!

They used to do it though didn't they, at zoos and such. I remember having a rather huge python round my neck (albeit only for 2 minutes) at sandown zoo (on the IoW) when I was 6 or 7. Maybe he just seemed huge as I was only small, but I'm pretty sure it was quite big by anybody's standards.

:-offtopic We use the gel for work, and I really wouldn't recommend it if your skin is broken, it makes even a papercut burn like crazy.
I let the bigger corns hang 'round my neck, the small ones are still too squirmy. They always seem curious about faces, they get all excited and the toungue flick rate goes up, but I wouldn't want to kiss them, I've got a boyfriend for that!

You get your boyfriend to kiss your snakes? :sidestep: :grin01:

 I didn't realise it could be read that way, he'd be horrified! No, I meant for me to kiss! :grin01:

Keep in mind that hand sanitizer doesn't kill everything. It DOES NOT kill crypto. Only soap and hot water can do that.

I figure my snakes are cleaner than my dogs who romp in the mud and gunk outside.

I never encourage people to hold them around their necks mainly because your fueling those irresponsible people to do stupid things with their snakes; but I dont have a problem letting them drape. The biggest thing is knowing the snake, there are ones I dont mind having near my face and there are others I want far away from my face.

When the handler is responsible, it depends on the snake whether its safe or not to do it. For the bigger bodied snakes you almost need to use your shoulders to help support their body weight, while its not the same as wrapping around your neck; of course its assuming the snake is handlable. Again it all comes down to the individual snake and handlers level of comfort; I just wont encourage people to do it.

Picture of me from a few years ago.. I love having a snake draped around my neck. If my snake likes my neck, then she'll be welcome to hang out there all she wants.

Interesting discussion, I myself dont mind having a corn, or similar colubrid sized snake around my neck. But when it comes to boids, those things are pure muscle. Heres a pic I found, it was taken in Ibiza a good few years ago, before I even knew you could keep snakes as pets. It was at an evening show once a week, and photos could be taken with it. I went to this same place twice in a couple of years and it was there both times, second occasion I had my picture taken with it being simply fascinated with snakes.

Behind me were two guys, either side to pick up + place the snake. Just before the pic was taken, the snakes head was RIGHT in my face and looking at me, and let me tell you, with a very heavy snake draped around your neck, and its face looking directly at yours, I absolutly crapped myself.

P.S. This post was not intended to be a forum hi-jack, please dont stray away from the subject too much

I like having both my bp and bcc around my neck, but lately the bp seems to be more afraid around my neck, so I don't try to put her there; lap is good.

My bcc loves climbing and being high, so she usually uses my neck as a stop on her way to the top of my head. When she gets bigger though, well, we'll see about the neck thing - probably not. She's VERY grippy/constricty all the time and even as a baby (260g, 33") can squeeze VERY hard. It will be pretty irresposible for me to put her in a position to hurt me when she is an adult.
