my snake died....... I went in there this morning and he was flipped over and dead. He was not like my other corns i had alonggggggggggg time ago he didnt want to come out and slither around he stayd in one place and he wouldnt eat... now he is dead i called the pet shop and they were like... uh do you still have him so we can look at him.. because we have not had a snake die on us for awhile........ :sobstory:

I'm very sorry that your snake died. My suggestion would be to get a snake from a breeder if you decide to get another one though. Pet stores are notorious for not being able to tell you anything about the reptile you are buying (as in feeding/shedding and whatnot). If you do decide to get another snake, make sure to wash out the old cage very well if you are going to use it and double check your husbandry beforehand as well. Do you know what might have happened? I am very sorry.

It is a terrible feeling when your snake dies, I know, my first snake died after I had it about a month. He wasn't a good eater as well. Definitely take it back to the pet store and try not to be discouraged. I now have 2 '05 hatchlings that are doing awesome. If you do get another follow the suggestion above and you should be fine. They say some just aren't equipped to make it.

when i took it back

Well, i went to take it back and they closed. I was so mad i cried for about an hour.... Just stress got the better hand of me. I went to another pet sotre and got a snake this pet store is good to their snakes. but i am questioning their mice. my cousins said he got a rat fromt here that killed his python ... the rat ws sick or something and when he went back to the store they told them they have been having trouble but hey couldnt do anything about it... so Kinda scary.. But the snake i have now. IS alot better it get out and moves and plays around int he tank.. I love to watch him.. So the last snake there was something DEFFENTLY wrong.. But when we took the snake back they said they could give us a 15$ store credit but that was it.. Out of a 35 dollar snake that they sold us. and it died. they give only 15 i was pretty upset... with my purchase there.

Sorry to hear about your snake. I've had a couple to up and die on me out of the blue, so I know where you're coming from. :(

However, running out and getting a new snake when you're not for sure what killed the first sounds like a bad idea all around. It could be something contagious, who's to know. And not to be mean, but your first few posts here didn't sound like you were entirely knowledgable about cornsnakes to begin with (despite what you've said). With one now dead in a week's time, and then getting another just doesn't stack up with most of us.

Please get Kathy's book and read it. Never trust petstores. Their only goal is to make money. There are a few and very far between that are decent in some respects. Most of their snake stock, regardless of species, is wholesale that were either poor condition hatchlings or poor feeders to begin with. Buy from someone on here who's reputable and has good quality animals. If you want a good pet snake, buy from a breeder. If you want kingsnake food, buy from a petstore.

But since it looks like you've already gone out to buy another one, I would wash everything the other snake used thoroughly in hot bleach water and rinse well. Throw away wooden items or other items that cannot be sterilized.

Hopefully this one doesn't meet the same fate. Best of luck.

However, noticing that you're in Georgia and last time I checked it was illegal in the state of Georgia to buy or own any cornsnake, I have to wonder about these petstores selling them.

While I personally have no idea why Georgia's law is so strict and don't agree with it, I don't agree with a petstore illegally selling animals their state deems as native, whether they're a snow, amel, or something else you wouldn't find in the wild.

So I would definitely be checking that out ASAP.

according to this page http://georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga.us/content/printversion.asp?txtDocument=6 Taceas is right...but whats kind of strange to me is this:
Georgia Law allows the taking of certain native species; namely rats, mice, armadillos, coyotes, groundhogs, beaver, freshwater turtles, <b>poisonous snakes</b>, frogs, spring lizards, fiddler crabs, freshwater crayfish, freshwater mussels, and nutria; because of their status as a nuisance or other reason.

No one ever said Georgia made sense...

From what I hear corns are quite plentiful in Georgia, and people commonly collect them for their own pets, unbeknownst to the state authorities. So its not like endangering the native population of corns, from what I can see.

By the "nuisance" definition, if a cornsnake is caught theiving some chicken eggs, could I collect and/or sell it? :grin01:

So sorry to hear about your snake.....I too bought a pet store snake and I had a time with him (ball python) not wanting to eat.....regurgitating etc.. it was not and easy time. I was so afraid of losing him. My vet was ready to try to force feed but he finally started eating right again. I'll NEVER buy a ps snake again.....I've found several breeders online that will ship and have been so great answering my endless questions etc.
