Snow Corn grandma ....

Snowcorn Grandma
and I'm too young to be a grandmother *sigh*.

I recently bought my son (9yrs) a baby snow corn. He has named him (or her) Bubblegum. I'll post pics as soon as I unstick my butt from this chair lol. He is about 12 inches long so maybe about 3 months? Not really sure. We are feeding him 2 small pinkies a week. He has shed once for us so I guess he is happy.

I am learning tonnes on this site and am really glad to have this resource available to me. We bought Bubblegum at Petland (and will never buy a reptile from there again). They sold us Bubblegum with mites...how fun for a first week eh? We treated him and think he is mite free now....

I have a few questions about heat etc but I will direct those questions to the proper section later on tonight ( I have to get to work here in a bit).

Anyway, HI!

Howdy and welcome to the forum! This is a great place with lots to learn and many people to befriend! :}

And congrats on becoming a grandma! My mom is grandmother to 5 little scaly ones herself. It's a great experience to owning a snake, especially corns! Can't wait to see pictures. We all love photos here! :D

It's a good thing Bubblegum is a snow corn! That makes it much easier to spot the mites and know when they are eradicated. Welcome to the forum!

You didn't post your age. How old are you? We'll decide if you're old or not. Diamond Lil is really old. She might be your age.

Welcome! This is a great site! I am so glad to have the internet! It makes doing your research, both before & after buying a pet SO much easier than it was. Looking forward to pics of the grand baby!

Have they got the Internet in Idaho now?
Just barely! There are still a few places where they don't even have the ability to do a credit card machine, no landlines. (I'm not joking about that!)

What a great mom you are, and I'm sure you'll be an awesome grandma to your little snakling. Welcome and I hope you have a great, informative time!

It never occurred to me that when my daughter get her snake that will make me a grandma. I'm not sure I am ready to be grandma yet. Nothing against grandma's I can tell you from experience that Grandma's are wonderful for their families and for their grandkids, I'm just not ready at 28 to be one....I am off to have a midlife crisis now.

Anyways welcome to the forum, everyone here is nice they have given me a wonderful welcome.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone...Wade, I'm 38 so I guess for some young'uns that would be grandma age but as long as its a grandsnake and not grandKIDS, I can deal with it. Now if the Bubblegum starts calling me granny I'll have to stop taking my medication...

I just got to thinking, where you have a little snow corn, right now & with that morph it's a great one to candle sex. It's not the most accurate way to do it, especially if you've never done it before. But it is something you can do yourself & it would give you a little better idea of the snake's gender. Here's a link to how to do it.

Hope that helps you!

Thanks Tavia...I'll give that a try. He is shedding right now (still) so I'll have to wait till he's done to give it a go. Do you know what morph he is? All I know is he is a snow corn. I don't even know how old he is...I just guessed at about 3m.

I'm not sure I understand your question, so if I answer the wrong thing, sorry. A morph is the appearance of an animal, basically. So snow, amel & anery, to name a few, are all morphs. Where yours, or your son's, is a snow it is a double recessive animal, it is carrying the genes for both amel & anery, but it's morph name is snow. If that makes sense? Snakes are really hard to guess on their age, because it depends on how much they are being fed & they also grow at different rates from each other too. 12" could be anywhere from a new hatchling to one a few months old. Hope that answered your questions.

Yes it did...again thank you for helping out.

I think I will have to have a gander at the genetics section at some point. Right now I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the extra info I've been getting. I am usually really good at researching things before I get a pet but I feel like a dropped the ball a bit with our corn. I don't think he is suffering (got the basics etc) but I want his set up to be perfect (or as close as) for him.

All this "grandsnake" talk is cracking me up. In a library.

I'm getting looks..

Welcome to you, and to Bubblegum! =]

I'm glad that made sense to you! I was getting a migraine & shouldn't have been typing at all. Corn snake genetics are migraine inducing, so yeah, go slow on that. Unless you have an interest in breeding, knowing about it isn't something you really need to know about, but it is nice to know what everyone on here is talking about. This is a really good guide on genetics with pictures.

Unless you are really good with genetics, you probably will not master the morph names & terms & what all the different genes do for a long time. I've been into corns for a little over a year & still have to go back over parts of what I already knew, every few months because I forget it.

I was pretty good in biology but I only made it to Bio 30...nothing after high school but when I get interested in something I tend to study it to death so eventually..I'll have to look at the genetics just so I know what I'm talking about. When we got our dane (Sherman RIP) I found out as much about the genetics as I could. What breeding fawn to a brindle will result in...what shouldn't be bred together etc.

Frankly, I'm just nosey and like to sound like a know- it- all....but I want to sound like an INFORMED know- it- all lol
