so, I tried to feed...

Leonore

snake momma
okay, so my snake arrived on Tue, June 23rd and last fed on the 16th (and fed 7 times with the breeder, so she was reasonably well established for a hatching...right?).

As suggested a few days ago, I waited until tonight (Sun - that's 5.5 days with us) to try to feed her.

After 30 min, she hadn't eaten, so I re-heated it, gave it a nice big slit in the back and put it back in the deli cup with the snake. Closed the lid and put it in the viv.

I guess I just hope that will be okay... she won't have access to the warm hide with the deli cup lid closed. I did put the deli cup on the warm side of the viv and I put a towel over that side (other side of viv is not covered so air can get in) to help hold in a bit of heat, protect it if the A/C kicks in, and dampen any noise or commotion. It's dark in the room.

SO is that okay? Do I leave her for the whole night? Should I turn off the A/C (I typically like to sleep with it a bit on the cool side, 73 or 74, but I can sacrifice for a night)?

IF she doesn't eat, how long do I wait to try again?

Thanks.

When they don't eat I just wait until the next feed, but since she is so young I agree with Nanci and say wait another 3-4- though I am hoping she ate it for you last night- overnight almost always works!!

When mine doesn't eat right away, I leave him in the feeding container with the food and cover it with a towel. I check on him every hour or so. If nothing happens, I leave them together overnight. That usually does the trick.

she didn't eat, that stinker!

well, better than a regurge. I'm sure she'll be good and hungry 4 days from now. My worry is that she'll start to shed, but she looks completely fine so that is merely a hypothetical. (my poor kids - mom is always worried about the "mere hypothetical" - lol)

I just feel bad. I thought I was doing everything right, but she's not cooperating. arg.

Just because she is not eating doesn't mean you did anything wrong at all- they refuse food from time to time with no explaination and she could be about to go into blue which is when ALL of mine refuse so don't worry. Take her out in 3-4 days and if she looks clear try to feed again putting her in the container and leaving her half on the warm and half on the cool side covered overnight. Hopefully she'll pig out and you can relax:)

She's probably still stressed from shipping. You haven't been handling her have you? If she ate for Lee, she'll eat for you!

we've left her alone. I did go in there to add an extra little water cup nearer to the hide and clean her other dish once, but I didn't see her then, so I don't think it was too much of a disruption.

I wonder if I didn't have the pink warm enough? It seemed thoroughly squishy and warm, but I've never thawed a rodent before. :?

so, if I check on her in 4 days and she is blue, she'll be okay if it's another week before she eats?

Oh yeah, snakes can go a few weeks without eating and be perfectly fine. Don't forget there are the little extra things you can do to make the mouse more appetizing, ie. braining (exposing the brain), dipping in chicken broth, dipping in tuna juice, and so on. But I wouldn't worry.

Have you tried putting it on a forceps/hemostat and dangling it a bit. I have a couple snakes, especially when I first got them, that if I just drop it in they seem to ignore it and just cruise around the feeding bin (most likely a little nervous about the surroundings I'm guessing). However if I hung it in front of them and moved it slowly, just a bit, it usually caught their attention.

Thanks. I'll try more mouse mutilation next time, maybe some extra juice.
I have feeding forceps too, so I'll try the dangle... I was nervous to do that because I didn't want to scare her.

Is this worth doing with a hatchling snake? I ask because ours won't eat although it's fed twice with the breeder- we've had it for nearly 3 weeks now and got him the day after he'd eaten, and he still won't eat!

Yes,it's worth doing with a hatchling! I have an 08 who from the beginning, would only eat if we dangled it. I also have an 08 that STILL has to be put in a container and covered with darkness or he will not eat. He's a runty little guy too, compared to my other 08s. He just insists on growing slower I guess. Instead of chubbing up he just gets longer! Good thing he's a male!
