So I've switched to a heat pad

But I'm a little cornfused. :uhoh:

How warm should the floor of the tank be? The thermometer (little circle ones from Petco) reads 80F just about 2" from the floor. I have a little grapevine over the hot side with fake plants draped over it for hiding in case the snake wants to stay off the ground.

To my touch it's a little warm, but not hot. I'm thinking though, it's more than 80.

It's tough to get the heat pad to stay between really warm to slightly warm using my light dimmer. Any thoguhts would be appreciated.

Hiya. You need to be measuring the temp at ground level, which is where your Corn is most likely to spend his time. I'd move the thermometer right down to the substrate. I think you;re right and the temp is probably more than 80 degrees down there. Aiming for the mid to high 80s at ground level immediately above the heat mat, would be ideal.

Also, I have to say that those circular dial thermometers have a pretty poor reputation when is comes to accuracy. They can be a good few degrees off either way - which can be the difference between safe and dangerous temps. You'd probably do well to invest in an infra-red digital thermometer, which tend to be much more accurate.

I love my Herpstats, but they are on the expensive side. What I did while waiting on them was put the cage up on paperback books away from the glass. It was fairly easy to get a somewhat steady temp on the glass without worrying about the glass gettting too warm.
