Some People Should Never Have Snakes

Jenn_Tigercat

Got Ghosts?
OK so one of my teachers got this Pastel Ball from a student. Sadly the snake was really thin and had burns all over the body. The tank set up was a plywood top, bottom and side. with a Plexiglas front. Apparently the guy cut a hole in the top to put a heat light in the tank (Yes inside the tank). Obviously this guy didn't do his home work before getting the snake.

The poor ball would climb up inside the lamp and be around the bulb. Can imagine how hot it got and am actually surprised that the snake is still alive. The snake is eating so that is a good thing. Hopefully this poor snake will be ok.

Oh, that poor snake! That just breaks my heart! I hope the teacher knows what to do to help the animal heal, or that he'll find someone who will.

And, you're right. Some people shouldn't do a LOT of things. With any luck, the guy who owned this snake will never own another one!

It's really sad what people do with their animals :( It's all lack of education or they listen to the pet store employees who know absolutely nothing.

I'll be talking BASIC care with people and I can name 3 right off the top of my head that has said "wow, how do you know all that?"

It's called reading and researching people.....people just don't bother doing it.

I have my fingers crossed that the ball continues to do well.

That's terrible.. Especially considering BP's have some of the easiest care requirements of most pet snakes people keep. Once you get them feeding of course, that can be difficult in the beginning. I hope this guy makes a good recovery and can be taken care of properly.

Omg yes! I work at Petsmart and most of the people there already have the animal and don't know a thing about taking care of it and just expect me to know everything and tell them what to do. Well, what happens if I don't know? What happens if I tell you the wrong thing? Can people not look up information for themselves? I remember listening to a coworker of mine tell this lady all this extra crap she needed to buy for her frog and it was like all wrong, I really do not rely on one persons word to learn how to take care of my animals. Especially if they're in a pet store. Yes I will say that even though I work in one. There's no knowing if they're right or not unless you research it! And I would not be offended in the least if nobody took me at my word. I would encourage them to do their own research.

Oh yeah my teacher knows what to do. She has taken care of the occasional snake that has needed to be rescued as well as birds :) I am just glad he ate cause that means that he is still willing to survive.

I don't know if he listened to the pet store or who ever he got the snake from or if just thought he knew what the snake needed and did things anyway. I am just glad that she took the snake from him so that it can get the proper care now.

I don't understand how people can buy an animal without knowing anything about it first. I'd say it's like children catching animals in their back yard and keeping them in a box until they die or they're forced to re-release them, but it'd be an insult to children and the people here who got their interest in reptiles piqued by doing that very thing. Grown adults should have more foresight and care in their actions, especially when it involves a living creature who will depend on them completely for food, heat, and safety.

Unfortunately I was one of those kids that did that. Would catch lizards and snakes and put them in glass jars. Of course I also remember the time that tried to catch a lizard and ended up grabbing its tail and its tail came off. Freaked me out cause I thought I had killed it. I even went crying to my mom cause I thought the poor thing was dead. It was after that that i learned that their tails can come off so that they can still escape.

But yes adults should know better and should do their research before purchasing an animal. I think many people end up getting animals and think that they know best how to care for it without actually making sure that it is what the snake needs. I got both Kathy love's and Don Soderberg's book as well as doing a bunch of research online before I got my first snake, making sure I had the right set up for him.

I know, I deal with that all the time at work, mostly with fish (you cannot put an oscar in a betta bowl and use tap water without conditioner). I know I research animals I plan on getting months in advance so I am positive I know what to do.

That happened quite a bit a number of years ago, but I don't understand people doing that now. Back before the internet was so much a part of life, we bought animals & there was barely any info out there. Mostly, just didn't know where to look for it. Lot of times the pet store didn't have a book on that animal & you were reduced to taking advice from the pet store employees, who may or may not have known what they were talking about. Our family was/is pretty tech illiterate, so it was quite awhile before we had internet. However, now practically anyone can go down to the library, hop on the internet & have loads of info on any animal there is pretty much. The only thing they'd have to do is weed out the stupid things on there but a little common sense & digging go a long way.

I always have my computer on me and always have internet access. If I see an animal I want, I can do a quick search and look for the basic information: Caging, size, origin, food, water, heat/humidity, general personality, and basic problems. I have enough animals now and have many species of animals in the past that a quick 10 second scan of information will tell me whether I can care for an animal. I've done fish, rodents, reptiles, dogs, cats, and birds. Most can get along in my care for a week until I set up a proper environment. I think I'm one of the few people who can impulse shop without dire consequences for the animal. Generally, it doesn't work out, but my animals are healthy and generally comfortable in life as far as I can tell.

If I notice that an animal I have isn't thriving, then I do something about it. My first leo gecko wasn't thriving, so I talked with the breeder and we decided it was because she was raised with others and so I bought a few more. Now she's thriving again. I rehomed my tort because it refused to thrive. I haven't heard back yet but expect it will be fine.
