Some questions about quarantining

requin

Kate
My boyfriend is getting me a second corn for Christmas! She's due to arrive tomorrow morning and I'm very excited! I have her viv all set up in the other room but I want to make sure I don't screw anything up.

So, can someone please tell me everything I need to do? I know that if I handle both snakes in the same time period I need to handle my original snake first and wash my hands thoroughly before handling the new snake. And I know to feed the original snake first, clean the tongs well between snakes, and feed them in different containers. Is there anything else?

Also...what am I looking for in the new snake? How long do I quarantine? We bought both snakes from Don Soderberg and I know he wouldn't ship out animals that were ill or had mites, but I understand that it's important to quarantine just in case (I assume the quarantine rule applies even when they come from the same breeder as opposed to a new breeder or rescue, is that right?)...I'm just not sure what I should be watching for or how long I need to keep them in separate rooms. Help please! :)

I would quarantine for at least a month if not longer. And you're definitely correct on thoroughly washing your hands/supplies between snakes. I'm also careful to not let any new snakes touch my clothes, just in case nasties transfer. But I could just be super paranoid, lol! xD

I will go to hell for saying this but Don Suderburg is as good a breeder as there is. I personally have bought dozens of snakes from him. If it were me, I would not worry about it. Everyone else on this forum will tell you I’m wrong, but that is my opinion.

Thanks everyone! I'll make sure to keep the new snake in the other room for at least a month and avoid cross contaminating anything, although like I said I definitely don't expect any problems.

Wade - I had a similar thought but I figured that getting my quarantine procedure down now would be good practice for when I inevitably add more snakes to my collection. :grin01:

if you need to quarantine at my house please feel free
did you get another butter?
haha, that would be a bit of a drive! :p We got an amel stripe, het for caramel. I can't wait to see her!

When I got my snakes from Don, I didn't feel the need to quarantine them from each other. Of course, I wasn't rubbing them against each other and having a wild party, but they shared a room.

Once I introduced a reptile expo snake, I quarantined her far away. In fact, I still haven't move her, but I kind of like her location.

And then I got 2 from Walter, so I'm keeping them together (in two different vivs). I figure they won't have anything because Walter is completely respectable, but if they did have something, it wouldn't hurt keeping them together. But they're not near my other snakes, mostly due to a lack of space where my original ones are.

Like Wade said, Don has amazing snakes, and there's really nothing to worry about.

I quarantine no matter what for 90 days since illness can lay dorment for quite some time. Aside from washing your hands also don't use the same stuff to clean their bowls and cages like sponges, washclothes, or whatever material you clean with.

Thanks everybody! She just showed up about half an hour ago and I am in love! She's perfect, of course. She's even more gorgeous than I expected, I love her coloring and her stripe! She's teeny too, reminds me of when my Kaa was just a hatchling. <3

She's a lot less shy than Kaa was at first, when I got him he tried to find a way out of the viv and then hid immediately, but she's just cruising all around and hasn't even climbed up to the ledge yet.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on her but I'm really not too worried. :) Thanks again!

Ah, I knew I forgot something! ;)

I do have a couple of blurry pictures that I took with my phone, though. It was the best I could do since she kept trying to escape into my kitchen!
