Something I just had to try once.

Hrm..it is my opinion that exercise is a silly reason for live feeding. I'm not criticising anyone, just the reason given. If people choose to live feed that is obviously their right, but please come up with a better reason than "he got a good workout" or we enjoy the show. Just because someone believes something does not make it legitimate. I feed FT, but under certain conditions I would feed FK. There are good reasons to do it, the ones we were given in one particular post, were not good. That being said, I personally believe that feeding live is an irresponsible endangerment of an animal that depends on you for its well being and care. Not a criticism, just my opinion. :) If it won't take FT, give it fresh killed at least. Oh, and I do believe that I have the right to criticise others, when they are doing something that I disagree with. As long as I do it politely. I could have phrased my post differently I admit. I also welcome folks to criticise me, if they do it politely. A smart man will take criticism and learn from it. I'm a smart man, sometimes. :wavey:

Newt

You are sadly mistaken if you don't think a mouse can bite through the skin of a snake.
That is completely wrong and could someday cause the death of your snake.
Especially if the snake doesn't take the mouse immediately and you leave them alone for any length of time.
Do what you will but don't be surprised when a mouse takes your snake's eye out or a bite gets infected or maybe a bite severs a spine. There will be no one to blame but yourself.
And all of these things have happened and worse.

hey marg my 4 kids are aged
14-Brenna
8 -Tyler
2yrs6mo-Aidan
9mo-Kylee
the first 3 kids on the list are very enthusiastic when it comes time to feed the snake and yes they watch everything from the dropping in of the prey to the last tip of the mouse's tail going in and they always have ?????????? to ask about it .the little girl of mine doesnt know the whole process of the feed but she does come alive when she is standing by the tank and MR LEE comes out for a slide thru his viv.

My personal preference is frozen thawed. I personally could care less what anyone else feeds their animal as long as they feed them and the snake is eating and doesn' t get hurt. As far as putting a live mouse in the viv with the snake just to see what happens, who hasn' t had an itch to see it in real life instead of just on TV. As long as you are there to make sure your snake doen' t get hurt I don' t see a problem with it. If the snake eats the mouse I am sure he doesn' t mind you watching either. I agree that FT is the safest bet but when my baby grows up a little I might try a live.

I think that this is another misconception. There are a few problems with being there to make sure your snake doesn't get hurt. First, I do not believe there is any way to prevent that first bite if a rodent decides to attack. You would have to have super human reflexes and speed to get from where you are watching to grab the rodent before it bites the snake. Not to mention some type of precognition telling you that the rodent is about to attack. I also see a problem with sticking your hand in to grab the rodent out if it does decide to attack. Personally, there is no way I'm sticking my hand in with an adult snake who smells rodent. You are right, however, everyone decides for themselves what to feed. Some methods do make more sense than others, both in terms of simple common sense and in terms of the general well being of the snake. :)

I personally see nothing wrong with feeding live. I think that it is amazing to watch a snake quickly and quietly kill it's prey by constriction. Bites could possibly happen, and that is why I do not feed my snakes live.

Mine eats the f/t as if it were alive. She strikes and constricts and then eats. I can watch the "wonders" of a live kill without risk to my snake, or having a poor mouse get terrified and then smothered.

I have two corns, one captive bred, one caught wild. My captive bred had been fed live prey at the reptile store, but I made the decision to switch to f/t. The first few feeds, I used the tongs & held the mouse by the tail, doing the "hey, look at me, I'm a live mouse, really!" dance with it & my snake did strike & immediately wrap around to constrict it. Nowadays, I can just put the thawed mouse in the tank, & the snake meanders over to slowly open its mouth & casually eat. I guess he's learned that this prey requires no extra physical exertion! My "wild" one behaved the same way. First feeding, he pounced & constricted. By the second feeding, he had it all figured out.

ive tried the f/t but MR LEE didn't react to the dead prey. i even put the f/t into a box with a live mouse to get the scent of a live 1 on it and nothing . i thought to myself it's not moving enough 4 him 2 react so i dangled it by the tail and no reaction .so i took it and got closer to MR LEE and the little fu#@er hissed at me so i was stumped. i let it lay in the killing tank and put the live 1 in by the dead 1 and it was like a light went on for the snake cause he snapped the live 1 up before he even checked up. het ate that 1 and left the warm smelly dead 1 alone so i had 2 throw it to the cat.will be feeding again this sat. im gonna try f/k or smack their heads up against the tank and daze the $#%! outta them so he gets his live constricting kill. will be using a gas on the big rats when hes an adult because the willard looking $#%$#'s at the pet store are ungodly man . :shrugs:
