Somethings Wrong!

JAG 32

look at that face :)
My abbott's okeetee (2004) is acting funny. On Saturday I took him to a reptile exhibit in Lansing. It was through our local herp society (MSH) so i figured all animals that were there would be heathly. I took all three of my snakes. The other two are healthy (one is in shed and one had part of her tail amputated due to a shedding problem). That night we went to the meeting also in lansing, we live in Portage so its quite far away, so we took the snakes in. There were other animals in the room other than reptiles and animals that were at the exhibit. When we got home that night i put him back in his cage and he seemed ok :shrugs: . The next day he wasnt out and about (usally he is off the walls). I figured he had a long day on saturday so i left him alone. Yesterday I was feeding and i saw a poo that was very furry and abnormal. I didn't feed him. Again He wasn't out and about. Very unusual for him. Today there was another strange poo identical to the previous one. He hasn't been moving a lot. His mouth looks like after he feeds, not ajusted and then he will open his mouth and get it back to normal (last time he only opened one side of his mouth) and them a little later it will be back out of socket. He is on aspen bedding.

What is going on?

Could it be a respiratory problem?

What should i do?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!
Please and thank you -
John

I can't give you any specific help on this, but it might be helpful for others to know if other people were allowed to handle him and if their hands were disinfected before doing so?

Sounds like mouth rot to me. Why do you think that it is RI? Have you noticed any strange breathing? If not it is probably not RI.

yes other people we allowed to handle him and they all had sanitized hands, and were under my supervision. If it is mouth rot... What do i need to do next? No i havent seen any strange breathing, i just noticed the mouth today. What could have caused mouth rot? He feeds in a plastic tub washed out every week.

i thought i would add, my mom and i did leave the exhibit to get lunch. Someone else with expierence in corns watched my place. He may have let people touch him without disinfecting. If the show is the reason i dont think any of my animals will be back to one.

Mouth rot is a common name for any type of infection in the mouth. Any time a snake has any type of infection they can start to become shy and less energetic.

Mouth rot can be caused by a number of things, small cut in the mouth that got infected, a peace of bedding stuck in the mouth, the hole from a lost tooth getting infected. Some of the signs of mouth rot can be discolored parts of the mouth, excessive fluid in mouth or nostrils, gaping mouth or mouth dose not close correctly.

Be sure that it is mouth rot before treating for it. If infact it is mouth rot you should raise the temps of you viv to help speed up the snakes immune system. I myself just spray peroxide in the mouth of the snake twice a day and raise the temp, but i recommend that you take it to the vet to find out what is actually wrong with your snake and use the antibiotics that the vet gives you because peroxide can cause problems for the snake if swallowed.

sounds like it may be mouth rot. I will have someone look at it to be sure. Thank you for the help. I guess its time to send an e-mail to my vet. Luckily she is a member of the herp society.

Just before you go jumping off the deep end ranting to others about taking your snakes to the exhibit, I'd like to say that generally mouth rot takes a few days to show up at it's full blown and noticeable stage.

So taking him to the show may not have directly resulted in the mouth rot per se. The stress from traveling, frequent handling, and strange people and places may have been the last straw for his immune system.

No one person may be to blame, but it could be a combination of things that led to it. =)

I had a Pewter about a year ago with a nasty oral abcess that cropped up over a few days period. I lanced it with a sterilized scalpel, flushed it out with a 50/50 Betadine-Water solution. I kept her in a very clean tub with increased temps, and flushed and swabbed her mouth out with the solution every evening. Within a week's time it had cleared up amazingly well.

Let us know how he progresses. Sometimes its a warmer room and quieter environment that makes all the difference. =)

thanks misty. I'm going to take pictures and send my vet them to see if she can say what to do without having to visit her. I will keep everyone updated.

Quick question, i know snakes sleep with there eyes open, well because they have no eye-lids, so if the snake was sleeping and you were moving and there eyes didnt follow you like they usually do ( i was up by the glass looking and moving my hand) it could be that the snake was sleeping? Its probably a stupid question but this is the first serious problem besides a regure and bad shed tail amputation so i want to make sure everything is going ok.

Since your snake died that quick i think that it was not mouth rot. Mouth rot can lead to death but it would take a long time for the infection to spread enough to kill the snake. It could have been a combination of mouth rot and some other illness that you did not notice though. If you have other snakes or any other type of reptiles you should check all of them for possible problems.

Oh John, I don't even know what to say. My first hatchling died after only a few short weeks it is simply awful to lose a pet. :(

thanks, i checked all the others are doing fine. RIco should be shedding any day now and corazon's tail amputation scar is scabbing. My dad's going to dig a hole for abu. Luckily the ground isnt frozen (yet) even though it's snowing. Thanks Again - John

John, sorry about your snake - I really hope it was nothing contagious that will endanger your other snakes, it's so sad to lose them and I am glad the other ones seem to be doing well. It might help you have a little more peace of mind if you could have a vet take a look and see if they can tell the cause.
