I DRAGGED my Hubby to a reptile show last Saturday. We got there nice and early ... for us anyway. There was a table of blood pythons there and my husband. Who just loves (since my sarcasm) my snakes. He tolerates them .... well all but one My Dumerils. He doesn't handle her at all but he watches her like a tv. LMAO "Erica come see what she is doing now!!" Anyhow ... He fell in love with the blood pythons. (of all things!!) I know how big they get and I have read up on temperament and care but, does anyone here actually have any one on one with these guys?! I just want to hear something straight from someone who owns them... besides someone trying to sell me one.

I am gonna order 2 boa cages in a few weeks ... I am trying to decided if I should order #3 to have on hand. LoL

Thanks ya'll!!

I had one as a rescue for about 18 months who was a holy terror, but super pretty just not nice, lol!! I have no clue how she was treated before coming to me, but was not into being handled, looked at, walked by, or having her water and bedding changed. I am sure they aren't all this nasty though just my experience.

I've never owned one, but I was THIS CLOSE to getting one as my first snake (damn glad I didnt). Theyre gorgeous animals, but I don't know if I could handle such a heavy bodied snake properly. The couple times I held juveniles, they weren't trying to eat me or anything. I think if you get one from a reputable breeder at a show and handle them while youre there, you can pick one out that doesnt first think it's some big hairy things dinner.

Jeff Mohr breeds them.

Yes I do.

They can be as cuddlely as a corn and as mean as the meanest snake possible. If you go with a baby, be sure to handle it often. Blood pythons don't take too well if you hold them occasionally...they will get nippy fairly fast. If you go with a sub-adult/adult make sure it is tame already...they are near impossible to tame when they are bigger.

A word of caution.... A lot of the baby blood pythons available are imported babies. They can come with a host of problems from parasites (external and internal) was well as feeding problems. I STRONGLY recommend getting TRUE U.S. captive bred bloods from a breeder who breeds them. Not those that are "captive hatched" which means their mothers were often times caught gravid and then kept alive until eggs are laid and then off to the chopping block for the skin trade. There are some overseas operations that are getting better and actually promote breeding, but some do not.

Captive born will generally cost a bit more than the imports but are far worth it as they tend to be great eaters and easy to handle. Biggest thing....talk to the seller. Ask all the important questions such as captive born, feeding, guarantee, etc. If the seller can't answer to your satisfaction...I'd move on to the next table.

Oh yeah...did I mention there are several species of blood pythons??? ;)

I have one and I will say not a snake for a newb or someone not yet ready to take on the more experienced snakes.
They can be aggressive and are very touchy to their Environment. When I first got my girl she wouldnt eat for about 3 months. I had to figure out what was wrong with her. Finally placing her in a new setup, and getting her requirements straightened helped and she started to eat for me.

This snake will get about 6 feet and possibly up to 7. Will be has thick as a burm and weight around 60-70 pounds. These are very thick and heavy snakes. They require large cages as adults.
I got lucky and got a nice one.
