Yes the temp drops because the temp in my room drops. I have the uth just laying on a 2ft piece of wood. With the tile you stick the tile to the tank then the uth to the tile so the tile is on top. When i used the tile i had it the other way round and it cracked the tank because the heat could only go to the tank. Im very new to snakes but ive read on here that the temp can drop to 70F at night with no consequences. so a few degrees at night shouldnt do any damage.
Go to Wal-mart and buy a $9 lamp dimmer. I wa reluctant at first to spend the money on a good t-stat....so I went and got one of these. It worked well, but would fluctuate some, so you need to keep an eye on them. I have since purchased a nice t-stat, and can say that it is one of the best investments I have made. I don't think that you can put a price tag on peace of mind, or the well-being of an animal.

When my uth got too hot for my liking, I simply placed a thick terrycloth in between the uth and the underside of the viv. My viv is a plastic faunarium and the uth was never stuck to anything...I didn't remove the plastic sheet on the sticky side. That way, you can move the uth from viv to viv if needed. If it is still too hot, I just double fold the terrycloth and it dissipates the heat quite effectively.
Years ago, when I kept White's tree frogs, I had stuck the uth to the aquarium and I ended up having to place ceramic tiles inside the tank to help dissipate heat and to prevent the frogs from burning their bellies. You could always add an additional layer of tile inside your snake's viv if it is still too hot. And they are also very easy to clean.
