Speckled Kingsnake

TheJadeReptile

My Little Sunshine
Last week, about Wednesday or Thursday, I saw a beautiful Green and Black Speckled King Snake. He was about 4 feet. I ran or rather limped to my mother and told her what I saw. Well this was at my sisters house and she grabbed a shovel and tried to kill him/her. I told her no she isn't so I ran him off to a hole in the ground and he got away. I was glad he got away.

Their is a large black kingsnake in my sister's back yard. She has done said "If I see him, I am going to chop his head off." Even though he has already fell on my mother's head, my mother said she is going to kick my sister in the butt if she does kill him.

Would it be okay to catch a king snake and move it? What is a good way to? Who would I need to call to catch and move a kingsnake?

P.S. Please don't bite my head off. I am just curious and I wanted to share.

There is much debate on whether a snake will survive if it is moved. However, I would say that if it is going to be killed it is worth the risk.

Release it near water and it should be okay.

Okay thanks Knox. We are maybe 10 to 15 minutes by car away from my sister.

Its funny, my sister's neighbor who doesn't even like snakes was telling my sister not kill the Kingsnake, because she rather have him than lots of Venomous ones. Both have really small child.

totally legit question! I agree with what others say though, if its a question of life or death I would move the snake def! And I would really only worry about territory or home range on female snakes. Male snakes are the migrate-rs correct? Even then, Im sure placing it in a location with lots of hides would be the only requirement, as well as safe from cars!

I would catch it and move it to somewhere safer, or keep it myself... Speckled Kings are my favorite kingsnake out there. I grew up catching them at my house when I was a kid. They are amazing creatures.

My friend uses a hook to catch diamondbacks and drops them into a cooler, then pushes the lid shut from the back side. They take them far away from their home and dump them in the desert.

I have caught many wild Speckled Kings in my life when I was younger, I just picked them up and never got bit. In fact, the only time I have ever gotten bit by a Speckled was when I had kept a baby, that was in the chicken coop, for a few days, and did not realize the best way to take care of it. I was trying to feed it frogs that I caught in the woods. I believe I was 10 at the time. After it bit me I took it into the woods by my house and let it go.

Getting scratched by a cat is worse than a kingsnake bite. Just pick it up gently, and if it bites you - no big deal.

Now, I still don't like getting bitten, but the idea of the bite is worse than the bite itself.

this, its not that bad at all! Plus getting tagged you will know what its like! hah!

I like the idea of a long sleeve shirt and some gardening gloves, Reach for mid back/ lower end and just gently lift. Shouldnt give you too much of an issue :)
a sweater bin would prolly work to relocate or a pillowcase would be fine

Knox, it's not me that minds it. It is my mother. She a has fear of snakes. She doesn't like Nessy, but she tolerates Sunshine.

pillowcases are helpful, so you don't worry about shutting a lid on its head. I do traveling animal programs to schools through the local zoo and we always do a pillowcase, tied at the top, and that inside a cooler with holes drilled in the top.

The cooler keeps the temps, noise level, and strange smells more constant and prevents 2 issues that could happen with just a pillowcase: crushing/other injury or poo messes leaking out!
