sphagnum moss or other

Leonore

snake momma
Hey all, just a question about moss...
(I feel dumb that this is such a long post about moss! LOL!)

I bought some online back when I ordered some other viv furnishings because it was on sale and seemed really cheap. Thought it would be good to have on hand.

(Of course, it came in a smaller package than I expected, so maybe it wasn't such a deal, but that's OT.)

It's not labeled as "sphagnum moss", but it was the only moss I saw at this on-line pet store and the same that is offered at my local pet shop (my kids were distracting me when I was in there, so I forgot to ask).
It looks very much like what I consider to be moss - big green and brown fibers.

But then I saw a huge package of what was labeled as "sphagnum moss" in the garden section of the hardware store. It was light brown.

OK - so to the point:
Is this unlabeled pet shop moss safe for a corn snake?
Would the hardware store sphagnum moss be acceptable in the future?

Thanks!

Would the hardware store sphagnum moss be acceptable in the future?

I used the sphagnum moss that I bought at Home Depot (hardware store) in Arshess' shed box, and she loves it. So, it should be fine. Also, I think I've seen around here recommendations to buy sphagnum moss at hardware stores, because it's cheap for how much you get.

But, I do wonder about the pet store type moss. It looks very different, color wise, compared to the hardware store moss. Is there any difference between the moss, aside from color?

I bought some green moss at Petsmart. It was a reptile brand name, like Zilla or something. Bright green fluffy moss, like moss you would find outside. The green came off when I rinsed it. I never used it. I like that tan, really thick, really fluffy sphagnum moss you can buy at reptile shows, and I also like Spanish moss.

does it look different from sphagnum, apart from the colour? Because the sphagnum that you can buy at for instance reptile shows is dead moss and that's why it's tan. It keeps it moisturizing abilities, so that's why it's used so much.
I know out here at certain places you can buy live sphagnum, and then it's green, like most mosses.
The colour shouldn't come off though...
