sphangum moss substitutes?

Poor College Student
I went to a few local pet stores to buy sphangum moss but they did not have any. They only have other types of moss that are for generic uses. I would think they would work, but everybody here always says sphangum moss, so I was wondering if a different moss would work as well.

I've heard vermiculite works well for incubation... however I've had good luck finding sphagnum moss at plant nurseries and gardening shops. You might try looking there for some. :)
 
peat moss

I found some sphagnum moss at freddy's but it was peat moss. Is this good or does it need to be the mossy, leafy stuff like in the pictures i have seen?

I've never tried peat moss, so I couldn't tell you how well it works or doesn't.

I've not used peat moss for my snake eggs because I've seen what grew with it when my husband used some for his orchids...all kinds of weird fungus and stuff. I've stuck with the sphagnum moss. Try looking in Home Depot and Lowes where they keep the things for orchids. That's the best place to find it. You could also try Walmart and K-Mart, also perhaps with orchid material but I've seen it placed elsewhere. They don't seem to always have it in stock, but it's worth a try.
 
I use peat........

I use sphagnum peat moss exclusively in my moist hide/laying boxes. I've never used it as incubation medium, I use vermiculite for that.

I think I have it figured out now.

Clint, do you moiston the peat moss when it is used for their laying box? Or just keep it dry?

keep it moist..........

You want to get it moist but not wet. I usually fill the container with dry moss then spray it down real good. You really need to work it in well. I squeeze the moss till it is moist throughout and does not drip. You'll need to keep it moist so when the eggs are laid, they don't have the moisture drawn out of them by dry moss.
