Splitting a viv

ok, so im really wanting either a armadillo lizard or a african plated lizard to give my corn a friend. would splitting a 40gal to give the corn more room be an acceptable size for both?

also im looking into a divider from herpsupplies.com (http://www.herpsupplies.com/product.cfm?groupid=7395&id=APPTDL) or just goin to get a peice of plexiglass from home depot. which of these would be better?

i appreciate any help guys! thanks!

If you get all three pieces to that, (1) clear panel and (2) tracks for seven bucks, it's a deal! I didn't see any deal info in that link, like how it stays in place and all but you could silicone the track in.
I'm not sure tho about them seeing each other, could be a ""stress"" problem.

I split a 20 in half for my two hatchling and use a 1/4" peg board in between.
I silicone it in place. The only problem I had was that when they got older, one or the other would crawl and push up the screen(lid) to get over to the other side. I had to screw in a strip of wood to the frame of the screen lid to prevent that. You might want to keep that in mind.

Good luck

Those commercial aquarium dividers are useless for snakes...

I successfully divided a 55g for herps using plexiglass and aquarium cement. The diffcult part is the lid. With a screen top a snake can nose it up enough in the center to slip over the divider. You need to glue or bolt a a reinforcing strip on top of the center span to fully secure both halves...

Having said that, the divided, 4ft long 55g was a bit tight for two adult corns in my opinion. I think dividing a 40BR in half is too small unless used temporarily for a subadult...

I'm hoping your comment about your corn needing a friend was meant jokingly by the way ;)

We posted at the same time

With the aquarium dividers you can glue the track in, but I could not figure out a good way to glue the divider to the track. I wound up with a big mess that had to be scraped out...

My original divider was clear, and the two male corn snakes never appeared to be stressed or even notice each other. If I had it to do over I would probably go opaque, just in case...

hmmm thanks scotty and lenny. i think ill head to home depot soon with the specs on the viv. that reinforcing strip brings up a question tho, if the viv is the ones with the snap locks built in would the strip get in the way of the lid properly securing itself?

and yes that was meant jokingly scotty!

You could get a strip of wood that fits in between the frame, then......
using the right size (length) small bolt, nut and flat washer. You could attach the wood to the screen using the flat washer to hold it in place (through the screen).

Or...
use two strips of wood, top and bottom of the screen and using just the right size screw attach them. The diver would have to be shorten for this.

Cool! You'd be surprised and some of the comments I've seen here ;)

You will probably have to test the lid, but interference with the clips should be something you can overcome. Another possibility is gluing a stiff strip of something right to the screen. Keep just the snake in there for a while to make sure he can't get to the other side.

My experience has been that if they can find a way out, they'll find it pretty quickly....

Given the possibility that one of the animals could break through the barrier, why not just get a second viv, especially considering that you are looking at a different species?

Also, even if there were no accidental co-habbing, the husbandry could be different from one species to the next, making it very difficult to provide the right conditions for both animals if they are sharing such close quarters.

Just something to think about.. to me the risk and the possible "what ifs" seem too great. I think it would be easier if they each had their own separate enclosures.
