Spring Hunger Strike (lack there of) and Update

Smells Like a Rat
Hi everyone. First let me say that Amadeus and I doing really well! He is eating like a champ and his first shed with me was textbook perfect. He's now in the blue stage of his second shed, in fact. He's been very ambiable and easy to handle too.

But I have a question. I was told by the old owner that he was male, but I'm guessing she never had him sexed by a vet or experienced hobbiest - that's just the impression I get. I think she's judging by the shape of his tail, which does fit the profile of a male from what I've read.

He is two years old (that's known for certain, since she got him as a hatchling), but is showing no signs of the restless behavior and refusing food that I thought males at his age were supposed to show. Is he a late bloomer, just lazy, or maybe a she?

It really doesn't matter; I won't be breeding, but I'm just curious. Does the time when this behavior shows very from animal to animal?

I think it depends on the male. I have 2 adult males that have begun to refuse meals and are *slightly* more active, and I have 1 subadult male that has been super active but is still eating. So yeah, it all varies.

My almost 7 yr old just started with his last meal this month too... I'd have to go back over his records, but I think he normally starts his hunger strikes in March or April. I'm not totally convinced that it was the additional of an other female that might have set him off. She's too young, but he maybe able to catch her scent as her tank is a lot closer to him than the other female.

Meant to add to the tail end of that post... without a female in the house, your guy may not go off feed at all.

My big 4 year old male, who is in the top tank of a 4 tank stack, above 3 females of breeding age, who are in the 3 tanks under him, has never as yet (touch wood) refused a feed. Not even over the last couple of months, while he's been mating with them :shrugs: I think it depends on the male, but maybe my boy is a bit unusual, I don't know :shrugs: I wouldn't worry about it though :)

He is only two years old....

Is he of breeding size even?
I have stories much like everyone else. Some males never miss a beat and would feed during the actual act. Others miss meals to the tune of 2 months.

Cflaguy, I believe he is - I don't know his weight (I need a scale, I know!), but he is at least 3 feet long and quite thick.

Ok, so basically what I'm getting is that you never really know. :) There isn't a female snake anywhere around him either.

Hmmm ok, well...

Early last week, Amadeus refused his mouse, which is very unusual. He's also been more active lately.

I've held off feeding him, because I'm not sure if he's striking or not. Today, however, I went to change his water, and he was VERY edgy and aggressive, and when I went to put his water dish in, he struck at it! (Made me jump!)

Is aggression also a time of the year thing?
