Would aquarium-grade silicone work, too? I'm curious because I have a tube of it, and it seems like it would be a viable option if both plastic (suction cups) and glue are okay.

Silicone is fine as well, I lump that in with "glue". As long as you let it cure properly before putting the snake in.

As for the aspen over the UTH, I try to keep it very thin over the UTH, just enough to cover it, and leave it deeper in the rest of the viv so they can tunnel.

The probes can get wet. If they are mounted that securely I just wash it with them still connected, being careful not to get the actual thermometer or thermostat wet.

You don't really need to mount the thermometer probe, but if the thermostat probe is inside the viv it needs to be secure, as if it gets moved off the UTH the heat can shoot up pretty high.
This is the main reason why some recommend mounting the thermostat probe OUTSIDE the viv, right on the UTH underneath. You can tape it down with aluminum foil tape. As long as you have the thermometer reading from inside, and adjust the thermostat for a period of time before putting the snake in, it should work fine that way.

It's not an issue for me any more, as I now have a rack.

Thanks Flagg! :)

I'm really looking forward to getting my flexwatt rack set up, but in the meantime it's great to know my options.
