All the 20Ls I've seen are in the $50 range.

I suppose it all depends where you look (and live). My local mom and pop store sells 20L's for $35. You can also check local classifieds and what not.

And then there's the $20 screen top, and clips.

I did considered this when typing my original response, but decided to wait unless someone called me on it:D

My 20L screentop didn't cost me $20. I don't know the exact number, but it wasn't more than 15. I'm sure if money is tight, there are literally lots of ways to fashion a proper, escape-proof lid. I don't bother with buying clips either. VELCRO is all you need. Cheaper (per unit price) and more secure, IMO.

How would you attach velcro? Wouldn't you have to cut a little bit of the screen top and the glass?

I just cut it in half lengthwise and it's the perfect width to fit around the edge of the tank. Cut it to whatever lengths you see fit and place it around the edge of the tank. Then, put pieces of the the same length around the inside of the screen lid so they match up with the tank.

is the velco actually strong enough....i mean i know a lot of people have docile snakes..as for me i tend to adopt a lot of aggressive ones...and well yeah...lol....but anyways.....does the velco work good for corns? what about bigger snakes?

Velcro would definitely be strong enough if you use enough of it and put it in the right places. Good idea Zach! I have a roll of sticky-backed velcro in my toolbox!

It's always been strong enough for me. I don't have experience with fully adult sized corns or larger species of snakes. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work for adult corns if you do it the right way (place it correctly).

The way I had climbing branches set up, my snow corn would get a lot of leverage and push up on the edges of the lid. Occasionally, if she got a really strong push, you could hear the velcro strain, but she never came close to getting out.

Let's just say that I'm paranoid about escapes, but I never lost any sleep over worrying about one of my snakes getting past the velcro. :)
