I bought a nice piece of drift wood the other day from a pet store. The tag said that it was heat treated. Is it still necessary to pop it in the oven, or shoudl i be ok? I can't remember the brand it was sold under or the type of wood, it was just a really cool looking piece. If that information helps, I can make a phone call to get (I'm not with the wood right now). Thanks.
I would bake it, and I think that is a very valid question because I believe many folks think if they get something from a pet store, it should be perfect, but guess what? It isn't sadly.
I was the same way at one time, thinking anything they said or tags said had to be law or at the very least informative, but live and learn right? :shrugs: lol, I think to some degree we all have been blind, at one point or another, to anything more than what the so called professionals state about reptile care, etc.
It is so easy for us to look at them as professionals, and a source of knowledge, when in fact most stores really know nothing about the animals they sell and quite frankly will tell you stuff that just isn't true so they don't look like they don't know. :eek1:
Wood from a pet store has been exposed to birds, mice, cats, dogs, etc. and have had more of a chance of being exposed to mites, parasites, fleas and ticks. Plus think about how many people probably picked up that piece of wood before you, to look at it.
A child with a cold, or someone in the construction field who had paint thinner on their hands or roofing tar etc. I know that sounds a bit far fetched, but you get where I am going with this.
Personally, I saw a guy at the pet store once, cleaning bird poop off of a piece of drift wood, haphazardly then tossing it back into the pile. I assume one of the birds got loose and did it but who knows, the point is, bird poop can be hazardous to your health and your snakes or other reptiles.
It also really isn't uncommon to find store bought reptiles with mites, fleas or ticks, so I would bake it just to prevent from infesting my own corn, no matter how slight the chance.
Plus you need to go through that routine every time you clean the tank to prevent salmonella or health problems to your corn.
I hope this helped. I am not always short winded but I try to answer the best I can lol.
