Stick on thermometer?!?!

erisan

Corn's name: Stimpy.
I currently have a stick on thermometer in my snakes viv. I have had him a little over 2 weeks and have been reading that stick ons suck, and only measure ambient air temp. I have searched about 4-5 stores ( petcetera, local pet shop called animal house, wal mart, and a couple others) to get one with a probe but I have yet to find one. Is it really necessary to get one? I use a day glo 75W bulb for daytime in my 20 gal. tank. and a heat glo 75W infrared bulb for nighttime so the heat isn't directly on the substrate like with an UTH.

I'm freaking out because I feel like he may not be getting the temps he needs. He seems to be digesting fine though and is almost in blue ( eyes just starting to cloud over) and I just fed him yesterday with absolutely no problems. He's comfortable in his viv from what I can see because he has plenty of hides (a log, fake rock, thick fake leaves to climb and hide in, and eco earth to burrow in.) and is active during the night from what I have observed. He's got a great temperament and is pretty used to me.

Anyways, I'm wondering whether I really need one and if so where's a good place to get a reliable one with good battery life (if it's digital)? Either online or at a retail store if you know.

Sorry for the super long post but I'm worried about my new best friend :D
I've almost got his viv perfect and just need this to complete it, although I'll probably add some more leaves and stuff.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!!
:p

I'd relax! It sounds like your setup is fine. I bought a digital thermometer at my local garden store. There should be something like an OSH, Home Depot or something like that near you.

Hi Erisan,

I got mine at Walmart - they aren't in the pet section, you'll need to ask for an indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe.

I find these an invaluable tool. Measuring temps on your cool side, warm side, under the substrate, etc... is impossible with a stick on.

Good Luck!

Word up.

$11 gets you a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe and digital hygrometer (reads humidity) built in.

I've gotten all mine at Wal-mart. As was mentioned, they aren't in the pet section, but over with the other thermometers. In my WM, that is by the plumbing and heating equipment.

i use stick on ones aswell and they give pretty accurate readings as i have one on the outside of the viv to measure ambiant temp and one on the inside near the heat mat which measures the hot side temperature... usually flucuating between 80-84 degrees F

Thanks for all your replies guys!!!! Now I know why I couldn't find it at Wal Mart! I was scouring the pet section for at least 10 mins and then asked an employee and he showed me meat thermometers......... So I left. :grin01:

Now I can relax!! Thanks again for all your timely replies.

Happy Herping. :D
