Stop Rhode Island Reptile Ban

S2033 has been introduced into the Rhode Island General Assembly. It would BAN the ownership of ALL pythons and boas. On January 11, 2012 Senators Tassoni, Lynch, Perry andPinga introduced S2033 into the RI Senate. The bill is poorly written by those who have little understanding of the natural history or captive husbandry of these animals. They are designed to beas broad and restrictive as possible, without any regard for the actual people they affect, nor the welfare of the animals they would displace.

Although there is a moderate occupational risk in working with certain reptiles, historically and statistically there is virtually zero public safety risk. Working withtraditional livestock and pets presents far more risk than working with reptiles. 35 people per year are killed by dogs in the US. The efforts by the Animal Rights Industry to exaggerate risk posedfrom captive reptiles, and sensationalize it through the media is reprehensible and irresponsible. No one outside of the keepers facility has ever been killed by a captive reptile. There has neverbeen death in the last 50 years in the state of RI from a captive reptile.

S2033 has been assigned to the Senate Environmental & Agriculture Committee. Get involved TODAY!

I overheard some people talking about this but I didn't know it was real... I want to send the letter but I'm uncomfortable giving out my address and name out online.

I think these bans are all of a sudden because of the man who let lions, and tigers and bears loose before killing himself. But snakes are "scarier" so easier to hate and ban. And don't forget the "science" showing that giant snakes are going to take over at least 1/3 of the continental US.

Big constrictors are a problem in the everglades. Since mankind has caused several species to go extinct through over hunting, I think a hunting system and industries using all parts of the bodies has real potential to remove this problem. As wild populations here are controlled or eliminated, licensed breeders here could produce animals to keep the industries going. Toughen penalties for illegal importation to protect these snakes in their native habitats.

what happened was some guy in pawtucket ri, had a bunch of venomous snakes. he had a bunch of other snakes aswell. i think someone just paniced and just threw a balnket ban out without doing any homework.

could they actually force you to get rid of or euthanize your python/boa if they did pass this? i mean obviously it seems like its that or face a $1,000 fine.
