storing feeders?

I am going to buy a corn hatchling this week. I told my mom I would put the pinkies in the freezer but she didn't want to. Can I just store the pinkies at room temp? If not where can I put it elsewhere cold besides the freezer? thanks.

Well if your mom wants to run to the store every few days then you could feed live(that way there's no mice in the freezer) or freshly killed. That's the only other option. She won't even let you put them in the freezer if they're in a bag, in a container(non see-through type)?

Definitely. Think about what it would smell like if a mouse(or 2 or 3....) died under your bed and you didn't know it. In a couple days they'd smell HORRIBLE. Not to mention that they wouldn't be safe for consumption.

she wont let me put it in plastic or a container or both! she said it would spread diseases/bacteria in the meat.

I hate to start things but your Mom need's a to be a bit more education. Feeder mice for sale are flash frozen at extremely low temps. As long as they don't thaw out before there placed in the freezer their likely to have less bacteria than the chicken or beef that they share the freezer with as these meats aren't subjected to freezing point before you buy them.

to add on to the last post almost all bacteria is killed in the freezer anyway. thats the reason why some people, even with their own colony of mice, freeze and thaw before feeding as all bacteria and parasites are killed.
if your mum wont let you do that i would not recommend getting a snake as you will not be able to satisfy its basic needs.

good luck,

lee

just had an idea. would your mum let you get an old freezer (look on ebay and other websites like that) and put it in the garage or something just for mice so it is not with the other meat.

hope it helps,

lee

Does freezing kill all pathogens and parasites?

No. A common misunderstanding is that freezing makes food sterile (ie, it kills all microbes including bacteria, yeasts and moulds) – this is NOT the case. The best way to kill pathogens and parasites in food is to cook food thoroughly.

Although pathogens don’t multiply in the freezer, certain species can survive the freezing process by going into ‘hibernation’ or forming resistant cells (eg, spores) and up to 70% may ‘come back to life’ again as the food begins to thaw. Salmonella have been known to survive for 7 years at –23°C in ice cream and Campylobacter can survive freezing if the initial contamination levels are high. Also, freezing does not affect toxins left by certain bacteria (eg, staphylococcal enterotoxin and botulinum toxins).

I'd probably rather eat a frozen pink than the same amount of frozen raw chicken...

wow, guess i was wrong like many other people. i can remember being told that it kills paracites and bacteria but obviously not.

thanks for the info nanci!!!

thanks,

lee

My husband was never very keen on the rodents in the freezer idea. So, when my collection expanded a bit and I need a variety of sizes I bought a small separate freezer for the mice.

Glad you are able to keep them in the freezer.

I don't get the whole "she said it would spread diseases/bacteria in the meat." thing. Don't you have cows & chickens in you freezer?

I was going to suggest asking a friend's mom if you could use their freezer but guess it's not necessary now :)

thanks for all the suggestions I finally convinced my mom that I can put them in the freezer:)
My mom was just like your until we got them and they were in a container and then separately zip locked.I also told here it was just like having a steak in the freezer.

I used to keep all my feeders in the kitchen freezer, not just the snake food either.I kept squirrels, quail, day old chicks and BIG rats for hawk food.My wife HATED all that stuff in there.I was fooling around one morning before I left for work(My wife and kids were still asleep) and emptied a box of waffles out and put a couple quail in it......Now I have a freezer in the basement :shrugs:
