Stupid question?

I know this might be a dumb question but I went to get some f/t mice for Bella's dinner tonight and the only one they had that was the size I needed was actually a pregnant brown mouse! I'm just making sure that 1- the brown mouse won't be different for Bella and
2- the fact that it was pregnant when it was frozen shouldn't matter as long as the weight is right?? Can someone help me out?

Hey Nicole - I don't think that's a stupid question at all! I would probably be wondering the same thing. The coloring shouldn't be a problem. I just googled and saw some suppliers even sell brown or black mice. The pregnant part I'm not sure on? Is there a way you could hold off until tomorrow and track down some different mice? I'm sure its fine though.

Yeah Bella is a year old and 300g so I think she can wait a day or two for sure!!

no. It's a small mouse inside a big mouse. She gets her meal and dessert at the same time. Does she constrict? LOL.... She might squeeze the little bugger out if she does

Omg I didn't even think of that!! Yes she feels she has to kill her dinner.....again so she constricts for a good ten minutes before she starts to eat!!

I would occasionally see pregnant mice in my orders from mouse suppliers. I fed them off to my snakes with no issues. I was always puzzled why the mouse breeder would euthanize a pregnant mouse instead of just waiting a few more days and profiting from the pinky's.
Personally I would slow the growth down dramatically with Bella. 300g at a year old is almost unheard of. There are a few good threads somewhere that show healthy looking snakes on the outside that had fatty organs and fat deposits discovered during their autopsies.
Snakes are opportunistic eaters meaning they will eat at every opportunity because ,in the wild, there is a good chance they might not see the next meal for along time. That being said I definitely had and have my share of snakes that no matter how much you want them to eat they just go at their slooooooow pace. LOL
We as caregivers need to regulate their environment and their health including their diet and how often they eat.
I know you are a caring caregiver so I only post for concern for Bella's health and if anybody else reads about Bella's age and weight that they don't try to duplicate it. :)

I take her out for exercise everyday!! But I want her healthy so I'll go to 14 days!! I'm going to get a new scale too because honestly she doesn't look that big

Nicole

Go to every 14 days. Even if Bella stays at 300g for a while hopefully she is burning some of that stored fat...

Sorry I'm late to this party guys, but now I'm a little confused (not too difficult for me to get that way, I know), but aren't yearlings supposed to stay on a 7 day diet due to the fact that they're, well, yearlings? I thought if a yearling was slightly heavy (not SO fat that it can't even jump to a conclusion!), that it's better to feed smaller or lighter rodents, but every 7 days.

Not trying to throw a monkey wrench into the works or "start any sh**" as we say in Brooklyn, just that I also have a yearling (187 grams at 13 months, so not a real porker!) and I wanted to ensure I'm feeding him at the appropriate frequency.

BTW, Bella is a real cutie there Nicole!!

So just to let everyone know.....I bought a new scale because Bella didn't look overweight to me and I just thought maybe 300g seemed a little crazy!! Well I weighed her on the new scale and it says 238g so that makes a little more sense right??

I mean she's definitely a big girl for her age but I've been told over and over again that every corn is different and size varies dramatically!! I mean Otis is only 4 months younger and he is literally less than 1/4 of Bella's size!! It's also possible that where I got Bella from a pet store that maybe they were wrong about her age!!

Much better !
She even looks better in the second pic! Go's to show yeah that 2 dimensional pics can be deceiving. 300g just seemed way out of the norm.......

Going to the Manchester reptile Expo ?
