i just bought one of those repti temp 500r thermostat/sensor but im so confused i dont know how 2 work it it gives no digital reading but im worried that my corn isnt getting enough heat i have one of those "kritterz" stick on thermometers but i think it is innacurate should i just return the thermostat or what? :shrugs: im so confused!!! :twoguns:

oh and i have a reptitherm uth it covers about 1/3 of the 10 gallon cage can my baby amel be getting enough heat and i just dont know it beacuse of the kritterz thermo.?

what i would do is get a digital thermomiter with a probe on it buy it from wallmart they have good ones for like 8 bucks. place the probe on the hot end under the substrate on the glass i usually keep mine about 82.... 85

hope that helped a little

Your stick-on thermometer is probably not highly accurate. I would do as Brosko suggested and a digital one with a probe and place it just like he said.

I wouldn't throw out a thermostat or take it back just because I didn't know how it worked. If you don't understand it, read any literature that came with it or go to the store you bought it at and try to find someone who can explain it to you.
There are probably even some people here who use that or a very similar thermostat. I googled it and it didn't look or sound overly complicated, but I can't say for sure (not being there myself).

A UTH that covers 1/3 of the tank is what is suggested and should provide plenty of heat to the tank.

Sure, should I draw you a map too? :grin01:

I'm all for helping out when people need advice on set-ups/etc, but a 14 year old can probably find things in Walmart without my help.

With that being said, to the best of my memory (which is surprisingly poor) at my local store they're somewhere in the area of ceiling fans and electrical hardware (near the end of the isle on the left side when you're facing north). :)

In my wal-mart they are with the house supply stuff. Quickest way is to ask an associate where the indoor/outdoor thermomiters are.

If you are willing to pay the price Johnson Controls...

I am a firm believer in buy it right the first time even if it costs more, after lived through some of those situations like yours.

Now I don't skimp even if it about drives me bonkers to dish out the big bucks lol. I purchased a Johnson Controls A-14 Thermostat. They have to have an extension cord wired to them since they are made to actually control a heat pump.

If you go to any search engine and type in thermostat's Johnson Controls snake, any or all of those words you will find info on purchasing them. I got mine for $75.00 you can check many places and see their prices, but long term I think it is worth the investment personally.

While you are at it, you might want to check out pro heat radiant heat panels, we got one of those too and I am telling ya if you want a secure, constant temp set up that combined with the thermostat I mentioned, is the way to go.

Hope this helped.

The Repti Temp 500R works just fine. You just need a digital thermometer with a probe. What I do is use a cable tie on the 2 probes, thermometer and thermostat, so both sensors are together. I put the sensors on the glass under the substrate above the center of the UTH.

The UTH is plugged into the thermostat. Turn the dial until the green light comes on. Watch the temperature on the digital thermometer until it hits about 1 degree below the max temp you want. I go with about 83-84. When it hits this temp turn down the dial on the thermostat until the green light JUST goes off. Thats basically it. Now watch the temps as the thermostat cycles on and off to make sure they are in a good range. With mine set up this way the temps on the hot side range from about 81 to 85 as the UTH cycles on and off from the thermostat.

Wow. All he did was ask a question. Besides I looked for a half an hour in my Wal Mart and couldn't find one even with the help of someone who worked there. Many people have told me that it's in the garden section, the electrical section, the pet section, even next to the meat thermometers. It wasn't even in the Wal Mart. And when I asked the employees they looked at me like I was retarded.

I thought Zach's response was completely appropriate-- and funny too. He has also been helpful in this thread. Let's all put our big-boy pants on. :grin01:

Every WalMart I've been to has the indoor/outdoor thermometers. They're near the electrical and hardware sections. Usually at the end of the aisle. The digital ones with probes range from 8-12 bucks. I'd get the $12 one as it has a dual temp display as well as hygrometer (humidity) all on display at once.

Did I not do my best to answer his question as to the whereabouts of a thermometer?
Besides, the very story that you told is why it very well may do no good for anyone to try to tell him where to find them in his local store. The people who walk around with the blue vests get paid for a reason (although, you'd have a hard time telling with some of them :) ) Now, if you happen to work at Walmart, or know someone who does, I apologize in advance if that last, sarcastic remark offended you.

I guess next time I should just draw the map and not joke about it. :)

And I bet they're on the left side when your facing North, right? About shoulder height? :grin01:

Not sure if a picture will help

I am not sure if a picture of it will help but they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Maybe they didn't know what you were really looking for.

You can print the picture and take it with you, the person in the hardware department then will most likely know exactly what you are looking for. Here are a few examples, hope it helps.

P.S. All hardware stores sell them too, just check on Lowe's or Home Depot's sites and if you go there take a pic of theirs from their site so they can help you find what you need.

One thing you also might want to consider is that our body temperatures are very high compared to snakes, and that what doesn't feel very warm to us is plenty warm to them. I have read lots of posts here where people think the uth is just not getting hot enough, but then after they get a temp reading they find that its just fine.

well, actually ...

I may live with the only Wal-marts not having the probe thermometers. Of course, we are half-a-world away from the distribution center ...

I'll be taking 2Gifts pictures with me to Lowe's to see what they have.

ok ppl i found the probe thermo it was about 9 bucks in the HARDWARE section and it is really giving accurate readings and im fixing the thermostat now  thanx 4 the help
