stupid tree, stubborn snake

Ok so I have a few questions. Copper is ready to shed again but she won't come outta this stupid tree I got her she goes in it as far as she can and I can't reach her. Her eyes were blueish then about 3 days ago they cleared up. But she won't come out of the tree even at night anymore. So first question-don't they want to shed cause its getting to tight for them. Second how can I get her out of that damn tree? And third should I jus take it out for good. The temp in her tank is about 83 and the humidity is at 50-52 at all times. So what should I do. And I can't reach her in the tree. And I don't want to hurt her. Please please some one help. :shrugs:

The tree is in the viv right? If it is then I don't see an issue. The snake feels secure in the tree during its shed, which is fine. And there shouldn't be a problem with it shedding that you have to deal with till after the shed is complete. Unless it has a history of bad sheds. After it sheds you can check it to make sure it shed completely. Shed cycle goes something like this...Snake will turn blue (eyes cloud) and the color of the snake body will become opaque. It will clear up and look somewhat normal. Then 4-8 days later it will shed. (this relative to the snake apparently they have never read the book as to when they are supposed to finish)

Well her first shed went perfect. Her eyes cleared and the next day she had shed. But its been 3 days and I haven't got to handle her in over a week cause she won't come out. I was just wondering if this normal or if I should worry.

Pretty normal. You're going to have to catch her when she's out and take away the tree. Do you have a picture of it? I'd try about 30 minutes after it gets dark at night, or first thing in the morning when you wake up, before it's light out, and see if you can spot her. Or put something _more_ interesting in there, like a paper towel tube and a piece of cork bark, and see if you can get her to switch hides.

Theres a pic of the tree and if you look you can kinda see her hanging out of the hole but she can get clear in the top of the tree at the point and i cant get her out.

Yep that's the stupid tree I got.. I'm def getting rid of it. I know she loves it but ill find her something else to love and hide in. And next time I'm gonna make sure there's no holes in the next thing I get her. Any ideas for new hides or how I should go about getting her out?? And what I can use for a temporary hide?

Well within the last 2 hrs she did shed and she was wondering about so I took that stupid tree out and took out her skin. But now I need a hide for her to substitute till I can get one.. and Nanci you are a life saver. Thank you so much. You have no idea how worried I was starting to become..lol Now its jus ideas for new hides. If you have any that don't have secret compartments in it let me know. Thanks to everyone who helped.

I have found that snakes are like cats...you buy the expensive/fancy toys (in this case hides), but all they do is play with the box. Snakes will utilize just about anything they can fit into for a hide. Mine LOVE toilet paper/paper towel tubes. I also have a flat piece of styrofoam in one one tank that they like to hide underneath. I have seen some people use part of an egg carton for hatchlings (not sure how big yours is), or a small cardboard box. Anything small enough for them up curl up in and feel safe will be fine for a temporary hide.

Hope this helps.

If you have him on aspen and he is burrowing, he doesn't like his hide (at least that's how I interpret it). It's trial and error but they aren't very picky. Get one of those cave hides though. The round ones with one opening. They love them. Get a small one though!

I have used terracotta saucers turned upside down and just barely overlapping each other or a small flat rock on the surface of the substrate with good success. They are cheap, easy to clean, and come in a lot of sizes to grow with the snake.

And yeah, our big corn gets box halves and all sorts of random hides. I am afraid to use terracotta with him - I think he's strong enough to flip one and possible crack the side of the viv. Scary!

pizza boxes, kraft dinner boxes, toilet paper tubes, etc. all work REALLY well.

they're free, and when they get soiled you can recycle them. snake slove them! they're not as pretty, but it's a small price to pay. i'd rather see a nose sticking out of a pizza box that have my snake stuck somewhere. which i HAVE experienced, and it's not pleasant!!

You can saw off the hollow limb with a hack saw, down near the base, then she can still use the hide. Or you can get new hides! Even with the limb sawed off those branches are very snake-friendly and human-unfriendly, because they have four ways in and out!

Thanks for all the ideas, and I cut the hollow piece off and she still uses it. So I think we are good for now. But if I go to buy another one I'm def gonna check and see if it has a compartment that I won't be able to get to her.. if so I'm not buying it..

There are two others I know about. One is a large, multi-branched bare tree, almost as tall as a 20L, that has a tiny hole in the bottom that you can put silicone in. The other is a very small bare branch, which also has a small hole in the bottom. The one you have is the only one I know of in the reptile section that has a hidden compartment. There are lots of cool hides in the fish section, but you have to inspect those closely.

Some day I need to make a sticky...
