substrate question

I've seen several pictures of Corns that are on rocks that appear to be the smooth aquarium gravel type rocks.
These make the picture look very nice, but I'm wondering if this is done for that particular reason, or if some people are using the smooth rocks as substrate in their enclosures ???

If they are using this, what are the benefits?

It would seem that it'd be easy to have a couple of batches of it, and one could let the "dirty" batch soak in a disenfectant overnight.
I'd think that it would hold more heat and offer a bit more of a gradual gradient (to the cool end) than most other types of substrate as well?

On the other hand, I wouldnt' think that the snake would find it all that comfortable.?
