Substrate stuck in mouth. Freak accident?

Starbuck has refused his mouse the last two feedings. He has been a bit restless, but, I figure it's just mating season.

I offered a f/t mouse this evening, and he slowly took it. I left the room. When I came back, he was writhing around with his mouth wide open. It is ugly to see your snake in distress. I thought he had the mouse tail hanging out of his mouth, but it was just a big piece of substrate. He is on paper CareFresh.

I managed to get that out. He is back fussing with the mouse again. (Not sure why he won't do his usual impressive strike and wrap.) It is on the top of a plastic hide, so maybe he can get it down w/o anything adhered to it.

I already have the bio-active Atlantic Botanical Garden type herp substrate on order and scheduled to arrive Monday. No more CareFresh!

I always feed outside the viv. Glad you were able to get it out.

Carefresh is nice for brand new babies, but it has some drawbacks that I don't like, so I just use it for the first couple sheds, then switch to aspen. First, it can get into the water bowl and suck up all the water. If aspen gets in, it just gets wet. Second, it often has a strange smell to it, which I don't like. It is cool when your snake sheds and the Carefresh sticks to the shed- kind of pretty.

Thanks.
I may switch to feeding outside the viv too.

The CareFresh was given to me free, and the bag is empty now anyway, so no loss there. Not stuck on the bio-active substrate that is coming - but wanted to grow more plants in the viv. I can always use it instead on the next viv (which will probably house mourning geckos - at least, that is the plan now). I've heard good things about Sani-chips as well as Aspen.

Well- it doesn't hurt to give it a try! Make sure you get sturdy plants that can stand up to snakes.
