Substrate

Whats up? I just bought the setup for a snake. I'm planning on buying a snake next week. I just wanted to know what is the best substrate to use. I don't want to use newspaper or paper towels since I want it to look good. So what is the healthiest, easy to clean and good looking substrate? Thanks alot guys.

I second the aspen suggestion. It is all I use in my corn tanks and they love it. It is also known to be safe for the snake--pine isn't known to be safe. So if someone comes on here later and suggests that pine is ok to use, ignore him. Stick with what is known to work.

The nice thing about aspen is you can "spot clean" it by just removing the soiled areas. if you do that weekly then you should only need an full change out about once a month .

I do a full change of the substrate once a month as well. i dont use aspen as a substrate though. it's cheap, but both me and my gf have allergies. the aspen for whatever reason causes my allergies to flare up. i use coconut bark instead. it's a tad bit more expensive, but just like aspen it's easy to spot clean. it also can hold moisture without getting moldy. aspen can get moldy.

i was given a hamster and he was on aspen. i had to change it out a week after i got him, the aspen was soaked and molding in the corners of the tank. although i dont know when the last time the person changed the aspen. he's now on carefresh. thats also a decent substrate thats super absorbent but it's not very attractive. hamsters produce more waste than a snake though.
