Tail Rattling

Just a few minutes ago i fed my corn. And i'd seen him wag his tail a little bit before when he gets nervous, but not this much. While he was getting his mouse down, i reached in to change his water bowl, and i heard what sounded like a motor running in his tank. It was his tail against his cardboard box! I've had him for a little over 4 months, but this is the first time i've heard him do the all-out rattlesnake impression.

It was really cute(because he's still pretty tiny. just under 2 feet, i think). Is this something they usually only do when they're disturbed when feeding, or is it something they grow into doing? Because this is the first time he's ever done it.

Most of my guys rattle if disturbed when feeding. Disturbed meaning getting looked at, or the feeding container touched. Inez rattles the entire time I handle her, but sort of half-heartedly. Jake rattles sometimes when I am getting him out. The other morning, I had him out, had just gotten him out and put him around my neck so I could have my hands free, and he tail rattled my ear! It was cool. The only snakes who have never rattled are Maizey, adult LTC corn, and Addy, Eastern Hoggy, who has plenty of other defense mechanisms.
