Taking snake to Mexico: Any special steps?

Hi all,

I'm going to be heading down to Mexico for about 2.5-3 months here in a week. I'm aware of, and have completed, the necessary work to take my dog with me. But it just crossed my mind that there may be things I need to do to take my corn with me.

Does anyone have any personal or secondhand info on the process of getting a corn across the border?

Thanks!

Hi Zach! If I may ask, wahtcha going to be doing down there?

I'd just contact the US Embassy in Mexico. They should know everything there is to know about it.

I have no advice for you, but I thought I'd say hi. Long time, no see, Zach!

Hi! How you doin, Dean!?

It has been a looong time... I've dropped in a couple of times over the last couple of years (gulp, doesn't seem like that long), but time has gotten away from me at school!

Your best bet is going to be to talk to the Customs officials and ask them.

This thought did cross my mind. However, personal experience with customs officials not having much of a clue on most animal related issues led me to post here first! Even when we show up with all of our export paperwork in-hand they get twisted in knots over how to deal with us when we bring fish back for research :)

I'll have to give it a try tomorrow and see if they have any ideas.

No you may not ask...top secret government research :) Just kidding!

I'm going down for school. I'm doing my PhD work on population genetics and sexual selection in swordtails (like the aquarium fish only the real, natural species) in river systems in Hidalgo, Mex.
So I'm going down to do some field experiments this spring at our research station down there. Plus, it'll mean I'm 17 hours closer to my girlfriend who lives in Mexico. :D

Get out the KY! I think LEGALLY you're gonna run into some serious trouble getting reptiles in (and back out) of Mexico. Mexico has been closed down to reptile exports for a long time (other than hard-to-get university research permits)- even though it's a captive bred non-mexican native species, I still have a feeling that taking your corn with you is gonna be impossible.

You may have to find a friend here in the states to "snake sit" for ya until your return.

I could be worng....

BTW: Is it still Dr. Winemiller doing the Ichthyology stuff? I have an undergrad (Natural History Collections Curation) from A&M. I worked mainly with herps at the TCWC.... I went with Dr. Winemiller (spelling?) down to Del Rio to do an enviromental impact survey one time... it was great...plus I got to do some road crusing/herping (in an A&M van-lol)! Good department- great people! Gig 'em

I'd been thinking about the possibility of having to sneak her in and out of Mexico. It wouldn't be too hard based on what I've seen firsthand of getting things in and out of Mexico. But it would be my luck that this would be the one trip where they search thoroughly...

Yeah, Dr. Winemiller is on my committee. He does fish ecology and life history. I also see Dr. Fitzgerald a herp guy and curator of the TCWC quite a bit.

You flying or driving in??

Driving

It's not worth risking your future over a corn. They'd hang you out to dry if you get caught...

I'm not actually going to go that route. The penalties against moving things like snakes are too harsh. Besides, it's easy enough to hide a corn but the supplies that come with her would have to be explained too...
I feel a bit stupid for not having thought about the possible restrictions until now!

and I defiently wouldn't post it on the internet.

True. Although, regardless of whether I stated my intention online or not, it's hard to argue that "smuggling" a captive bred reptile was not premeditated ;)

I could snake-sit for you if you can't find someone easier. People did it for me, after all!

Thanks, I've mass emailed a bunch of friends and I imagine one of them will be able to help me out. I'll keep you in mind, if I get really desperate because shipping would be a major hurdle for me!

I have done tons of research about this, since im might b going back home (Mexico) as soon as im done with my university and there are tons of paper work to be filled so are you rdy for all the info?

and it costs some times even more than what you pay for the snake,
you know all they care its the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ big time

Nothing to add... just wanted to say it's great seeing you around, Zach. I'd love to read your study once it's complete. I was a fisheries major back in college and population genetics fascinated me. :)

Sure thing! Sorry, I took off for Mexico and hadn't checked back in until now. I'm still down here and with the weather this crappy, I may never have data to publish  Actually, I'm hoping to submit my first pop gen pub soon.

I hope everything goes well for you down there. Sounds like you are going to have a fun trip. I would love to go on some field research type things one day. Though I am getting a degree in Elementry Ed. and it doesn't seem like there are many opportunities for something like that....lol
