tank bottoms

right now I'm using newspaper on the bottom of the tank i feed Norc(my corn snake) in a separate cage. is it OK to put potting soil in the bottom of the tank and plant things for her?

Well the first part sounded fine. But I would advise against just putting potting soil and real plants straight in there. If you want to go for a more aesthetically pleasing look, then I'd suggest buying some silk/plastic plants. You can get them either over the net or in pet stores for about $6, and they range in size.

i would agree, i wouldn't put soil in there. i would suggest either aspen shavings or coconut fibre if you want the natural look, but most other wood shavings work fine
EXEPT of course, cedar or pine shavings

Or you could go to Walmart or some craft stores and get silk/fake plants there pretty cheap, and sometimes on clearance.

Soil allows too mich bacteria to grow to be the only substrate. However you could still use real plants in plant pots, like I have in my vivarium. Just make sure you buy ones that like lots of heat and light otherwise theyll die! And they need watering every couple days.

thank you!!

thanks a lot for the info, i think for now i'll keep the newspaper and get the coconut stuff later.

I'm curious, what kind of plants are you using? I really like that idea. It gives the snake something "real and natural" without much work. :)

I'd think a small bromeliad would be good. They're low maintenence, are attractive, grow very low to the ground and many types would make great hiding spots.

there are bio vivs that are just fine to house your corns in. do a little research. bacteria can be good in these types of set ups, easy to maintain as well (from what iv'e read).. people have been using them for frogs for years with good success. good luck.

A bromeliad would be good however I don't have one. I've got a couple dragon plants (thos spikey leaf ones) and a couple simply called 'jungle' foliage I picked up from Tescos for 99p... (see pic)

When I had glass lizards I tried and tried to grow real plants in with them, but the plants never lived long. I think if you _do_ put in plants, it's best to keep them potted so you can get them back out when they need to be replaced, easily. There's a pretty good book called The Art Of Keeping Snakes that deals with natural vivs.

I've got a couple of small bromeliads in pots that have just been sitting around outside. I may try them in the viv with my Corn to see how it looks. This thread made me think about that lol.
