I looked and coujld nmot find anything on this but i bet i am being blonde as usual and missed it but anywhoe-do corns like long or tall tanks? i read some saying they have a 20 gal tall and some a 20 gal long>? whats the difference and which is best? right now i have a 20 gal long i believe and i have to clean it out(my rats prior home)..what can i use to get the smell of the rats out of the cage...is dish soap ok if i rinse it out really good?...and a quick one on feeding-i am gonna feed frozen(thats what they feed at petco)and i was wondering if they need to be fed out of the cage in maybe a small box, so they dont associate the food with the cage? i am feeding frozen also because i have pet rats and i dont think i coujld imagine feeding them to the snakes(i know snakes have to survive also and i love them soo much too so if neccesary i would feed live and i would get over it)i bet some of you have pet rats or mice also(maybe not) and sorta know where i am coming from(maybe not lol) but threads getting long so i will talk to you asl later!:D...

(i might name the snake coda cuz he/she is not orange more a browm stripy wild looking!really adorable if i get that one...they also have an albino-any pros cons about getting an albino? :shrugs: )

Hi scorch84 i have not had Cornsnakes for long so you might want to wait for more people's advice but here's mine anyway.

As for tank sizes i am not too sure about mesuring it in gallons and stuff but i believe ya want say a 2 foot across tank and that should be fine, you can have bigger but if so make plenty of hides as Cornsnakes can feel pretty open and threatened.

As for washing the rat tank out you want a very very and i can't stress how very mild bleach solution and once washed you want to rinse many many times with water and then leave to air so that you can not smell any bleach what so ever.

As for feeding frozen that should be fine i do it and have never had any problems and if he don't seem interested just wiggle it and then watch him go :grin01:

And as for feeding i always feed my snake outside as i have heard people say if they digest their substrate it can be very harmful to the snake and kill them.

Sorry it's not much help but i am still a learner.

Jamie

oh thanks..that was really helpful actually-i just cant wait to get my corn...hoping sometime this weekend(if my mom decides yes or no...)thanks again:D

Might want to put it outside to air aswell to get some nice outdoor air to the rat tank once washed.

Corn snakes aren't very arboreal, so floor space is more important than headroom, so use the long.

making progress!

thanks guys i just have a regular 10 gal right now and will just move up a size when the snake gets bigger...how long will that be?...i cleaned the tank out and i also realized my little heater in my room keeps it at a nice temp...and if it gets too cold i just kick it on...do i need an undertank heater still if the room is pretty warm during the day and heated at night? also what sort of light should i use to view my baby snake when i eventually get him(which is making progress, my mom is now saying "Will See...") which usually is a..YES!...well if i do get the little guy i will set up a poll for names and most deffinetely put up some pics...well gotta go so bye:D..

10 gallon tank should be fine for probably a year, afterwards a 20 gallon long should do fine for the rest of live as a ssssnake. Keeps it at a nice tamp? Are you measuring this with how YOU feel or with a thermometer? Remember, we are warm blooded, so the temperature my feel fine to you and turn out to be to hot or cold for the snake. Id still invest in a UTH/thermostat combo. Snakes dont need any light, so any will do! Just be sure to watch the temperature with the light added.

well our house(not my room) is about 75 and my room was warmer than that...thats was from the thermostat for the heating of the whole house...do they selll the thermostat with the probes at petco?...i might be getting the tank set up this week and then the snake this weekend, where do youi find the hides that they crawl in and it is up against the glass and you can see the snake it it?(hope thats not a bad description lol)i am excited and am so glad i found this forum..i am on a lab forum also and it is soooo helpful...well thanks tons guys!!...

If not, which I sure they do, you can check out any other pet store. Petsmart, even Walmart will have them

Doesnt that defeat the purpose of a 'hide' ? Haha, its a neat idea, I thought about getting one...But would the snake actually use it if his whole 'hide' is not hidden at all! :crazy02:

ya it does defeat the purpose but the snakes at petco(which are housed together!..i hear thats not a good idea...)was in it and he/she was the cutest little thing!!! a dark color...no idea what kind..petco did not even know...oh and they dont sell the ones with probes, niether does petsmart...but walmart will carry them right?

also..the lid to my ten gallon wont work too good for a corn,my rats could lift it off!(not a good fit)so do they sell just the lids for 10 gal somewhere?...and what ones are the best?

another question-how often can a corn be handled...how much is too much? willl they stress if handled too much...i have a feeling i wont ever want top put him/her down...thanks guys this forum is soooo helpful for a newbie to snakes...

That's not a bad description at all. :) I have a little hidey "mountain" for my youngest corn. I bought it at Petsmart. From the front it looks like a pile of rocks, but from the back it looks like a cutaway shot of an ant mount or something like that...with these sort of "tunnels". He wouldn't use it until I turned it where the open part faced the wall, which kind of defeats the purpose of the see-through hide. I recently put a toilet paper tube into his viv and he abandoned the hidey mountain completely. You know that the more you spend on a pet accessory, the less the pet will like it. :)

My other two larger corns each have paper towel tubes and wooden hides (like these http://www.petsmart.com/global/prod...<>ast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1177599172058).

wow..so i dont need to spend a huge amount?...how much roughly does it cost to set up a tank...i have a 10 gal...need plants, hide, dish, under tank heater, thermometer, thermostat(which i did fond online at petco),forzen mice,branches...oh and a new lid for my tank..is that too much?

Don't get the thermostat or probe thermometer from petco. I work there and it's not even worth it for me to get it with my 20% discount.
Since its just one snake and one enclosure I reccomend purchasing the Reptitemp 500r and the Zoomed Digital thermometer with probe from www.reptilesupply.com I got those two AND my UTH for $42 w/shipping. The thermostat costs about $40 in the store.
