Tank size/UTH predicament

So apparently my tank is a custom, i find that out when anywhere i go, no one has heard of the dimensions i give as being a standard size by any retailers. or someone re-edged a smaller tank in a thick black plastic trim and widened it by a half inch in each direction. so low and behold when i bring home the size "medium" UTH (what i need to keep the proper temperatures in my tank) it wont fit on the bottom because someone thought to make the black plastic trim come in more than two inches on each side making it impossible to fit. so i read the directions and it says as an alternative you may stick it on the sides. I stick it on the backside glass and am getting a temperature of 83 on one side of the tank and 77 on the other.

Do we forsee any problems? i place my hand on the inside of the tank on the glass that the pad is stuck too and i can hold it there (as long as my patience lasted) and not even feel remotely hot.

I know everyone talks about sticking it "Under" the tank.....will this be ok?

If your viv has a glass bottom then yes, I would put it underneath. I say this because when a snake is digesting food the head should ideally be under the belly, if it was on the side this wouldnt be the case. You should find the temps are ok if you put it under, but do moniter it for a day or so before you put your snake in.

You can trim the UTH a little bit, as long as you are careful not to cut into the heat elements/wire. I have seen people mount the UTH on the sides of their tanks and then supplement the heating with a basking light shone onto a piece of slate in the tank. The basking spot provides the digestion heat when the snake does it's basking. The only problem was that the snake was often seen leaning against the back glass of the vivarium soaking up the heat coming through. Most of the heat was lost upwards and did not radiate into the tank. So, you can use it on the side of the tank, but it is a waste of the product. Resolved? Under the tank? Yes!
