Tank Size

Hi All,

I have an almost 6 months corn snake (54cm) and was wondering how long this terrarium is suitable for my corn and until which length (the snake's) I can keep this terrarium.
The terrarium is as follow:
Lenght = 60cm (2 feet / just under 24 inches)
Height = 41cm (16 inches)
Depth = 41cm (16 inches)

I know they like cosy/hidy space but I just want to make sure that I do the right thing when the time comes. ;)

Thanks

I just found out that my tank is 26.54 gallons (not being pedantic on the numbers ;) ), that should be good for an adult, right?

They "say" that an adult corn can live just fine in a "20 gallon" viv. However once my corn has reached FULL adult size, I feel like a 30-40 gallon would be more appropriate, if anything to make more area for shedding.

That's MY opinion however, the experts DO say that the 20 gallon should suit just fine.

Hope this helps. :cheers:

I agree that a 20 gallon long (30 inches/ 75cm) aquarium would be minimally suitable for an adult corn, I personally stick to the rule of a tank at least 2/3 the length of the snake.
It is a personal preference and a deeper tank (such as yours) provides more floor space as well, and may suit your needs better.

Thanks a lot for your comments :)

I was told that this tank would be sufficient for an adult but looking at it, it seems too small. I will change it in a year or two when she is a bit bigger.

They say a 20 gallon LONG will fit an adult because it is 30 inches long rather than 24" like a standard 20 gallon tall tank. Based on your dimensions your tank sounds like a 25 gallon (?), but even those dimensions are different. Aquarium Dimensions
I have heard that for every 2 inches the snake is long the tank should be at least one inch long. So a 30 inch tank could hold a 60 inch snake, which is a 5 foot snake and pretty big for a corn.
However, I feel the same way about 20 longs just not being quite large enough. So my girl that's in a glass viv will move into a 30 gallon breeder, which is 6 inches longer and 6 inches wider than a 20 gallon long. That should give her a little extra room.

So, from what you heard, Freya which is minimum 54cm long (just over 21.5 inches) should have a tank of minimum 36cm long (just over 14 inches)! That doesn’t really leave room to spread and stretch…. Gosh, I would go mad in such small space :angry01:

Well, these are considered to be the minimum sizes that can hold an adult. I agree that this doesn't seem very large. I don't have any adults. My largest is about 30 inches or so and she is in a 20 gallon long so she's about as long as her tank right now. She still seems like she has plenty of room to cruise at night. But like I said before, I still plan on getting her a 30 gallon this summer.
