I have been using a substrate called CareFresh. It's a wood pulp paper product. But I am changing to aspen because of some good reports and advice. As far as a heater goes, a heating pad on the bottom works fine. Shooting for 84F I think is right. A hex tank would be cool.....get some branches they love to climb 
What are the dimensions of your tank?
A hexagon tank sounds cool, but it's important to make sure it is the right size for your snake.
Sand is not a good substrate choice for corn snakes. Cedar bedding is toxic to corns. Aspen is cheap, clean, and attractive.
If all else fails, you can always use paper towels.
The heat pad should be placed at one end and where the temperature on top of the substrate should measure around 84ºF. The snake should have a cooler side (somewhere in the mid 70's) where it can go if it feels too hot.

I am not sure what you mean by only enough space for one heat. You do need a cool side and a warm side.
I use a heat pad and Aspen as bedding.
How tall is your hexagon tank. Is it taller than wide? If you have a lid that fits very tightly you can turn the tank on its side that way your snake will have more room to slither around.
Then you will have a cool side and a warm side. IMHO

Aspen is a great substrate! I love the stuff!
As for heating one side, get an under tank heater and just put it under half of your tank. I keep my corn in a plastic rubbermaid shoebox and it's only about 18 inches wide. YOu can still do the warm side/cool side thing in a small tank.
you may also want to reconsider getting a new tank untill your corn is about 2 feet-ish, they like smaller tanks when they are young.
If you do get a big tank for a tiny corn, just make sure you have a tonne of hides all over it.
