Telling if your corn is too hot?

DrunkZombie

Corn Snake Owner
Hey, i was wondering if leelou is too hot, she is in the smaller vib with a light. The hot end is 28C and the cool end is 24-26C.

She has been burying herself in the wood shavings. She did mate with the male corn- slinky but wouldnt this be too quick for finding a lay site? there is a lay box in there anyway (damp moss in a plastic tub with a damp towl on top to cover her)

Is she too hot? or just likes to bury? she is the type of snake to bury but then, she is hiding under the shavings?

Thats 82 F to 78 F - 75 F :) I think that should be fine but it seems to me that she trying to avoid the heat by digging?

82 degrees is pretty cool - the recommended temp for the warm end is more like 88 degrees. I think maybe you need to get that warm end temp up a little bit for her. Also, the cool end needs to get a bit lower. It should be in the low 70s all the time, rather than the mid-to-high 70s. It could well be that she can't get cool enough for comfort.

On the other hand, Corns do enjoy burrowing sometimes. It could be that this is just something she does now and again anyway.

But maybe put a laying box in with her - just in case.

Well i just orderd a new bulb and there is a lay box in there. I turned the light off and she went to the warm end. So think she just digging around.

88 is a little too high IMO... I thought the recommended temperature range for the warm side was 80-85F. 82 sounds fine to me.

Corns do seem to enjoy burrowing. However, I'd like to ask how you're measuring your temps, and do you have a thermostat regulating the heat? You should really be using a digital thermometer with a probe; if you're using stick-ons, they're wildly inaccurate and your tank might be much hotter than you think it is. :)

LOL! I remembered to check the latest version of Kathy's book before posting. Page 50 under Heating states:

"...approximately a range of 70-88 degrees F (21-31 degrees C)."

:)

I do like to give my snakes all the best stuff (nice wooden vib, big and roomy) But i really dont see the point in gettting a thermostat. I use stick ons but i do use common sence and just see how hot it feels myself. I really do wish that i had the money to get a self regulating heat thingy and all that stuff. But as it is im only a paintball marshal :(

Im looking into getting a dimmer switch on both lights though so i can turn them down or up if needs be.

DZ :)

Well if your body temp. is 98 degrees in my really non-scientific mind it would have to be over 98 before is feels hot to you :bang: much to hot for your snake.
