temp measurements

tsst

Deuce is watching!
I got an indoor outdoor thermometer. Should I be measuring the warm end right on the surface of the floor of the viv under the substrate? or should I be checking right above the surface of the substrate?

is it a digital thermometer? if not, get one of those. i also liked to put paper towel down under the substrate incase my snakes did burrow to the bottom. but, i stopped using substrate a while ago. too messy, too expensive. i think there is better stuff out there. but, definately get a digital thermometer. it's a must have for reptile owners.

cheers...

I agree with the rest on them ... get a digital .. measure the surface temp and in the substrate .. temp guns work well too ...
good luck with your set-up

Yes it is digital indoor/outdoor with a contact probe. I taped the probe wire to the glass side of the viv. Is this what most do? I didn't want it to become a tangle trap.

With the probe sitting on the substrate ?? I just have mine laying on the substrate no tape or anything ... no tangles ...

my probe is under the substrate directly on the glass bottom of the viv. I then taped the wire to the probe to the back glass of the viv.

EEEK! :eek1:

Tape in a viv is a BIG NO NO. Take the tape off, your snake will be fine, it wont get tangled up. The tape poses more of a threat than a dangly cord.

The rest of them didn't suggest measuring temps on the surface;)

Definitely measure them below the substrate if you are using a UTH. A heat lamp would be a different story.

I don't understand what you are saying by back and side glass. The probe should be on the bottom of the tank against the glass. You always run a risk using tape in a viv, but I can't tell you not to do it, because I have done it quite successfully with no problems in one viv. If you are going to use it, make sure you absolutely keep an eye on it. Don't use anything that dries or comes unstuck easily, because that exposes the snake to getting stuck to it. EDIT: I've only used the tape on the side of the viv, not the bottom.

A better option: I've had a lot of success just laying the probe along the bottom and covering it with substrate to hold it down. Then just give yourself some slack in the cable and run it along the bottom of the viv and up the side. If that doesn't make sense, just say so, and I will try to come up with a picture or something to illustrate it.

I will remove the tape. Had not thought about the danger it posed. Was more worried about the loose wire. This site has paid off big in the very short time I have been here thanks all!
