Temperature Question: Please help!

BabyMowgli

just one more....
Hi,
I am a newcomer as well. I have a 10 gallon tank with an under the tank heater and aspen as a substrate. I know my young corn snake is supposed to be kept at about 85 -90 degrees, my room is warm, but the tank thermometer is always at about 80 degrees. My snake doesn't seem bothered by it, he hides in his hide and explores his tree and ground, but i am worried that he is too cold. Should i change anything?? Any feedback would be awesome!
Thanks!
Brianna & Mowgli

Don't panic! Seriously, things sound okay so far. First off, I would say 80-85 is a good range. Typically, hatchlings like a little bit warmer conditions but I wouldn't go near 90. What kind of tank thermometer are you using and where is it placed?

Hi,
I have a ZooMed thermometer placed at the bottom in the middle of my tank.
is that ok?
Bri
PS is there anyway you know how to get my profile picture to work? then you would see my thermometer
thanks

If you mean your avatar, it could just be a size issue. You can probably open it in a picture viewer and then resize it. I think the limit is 160 by 160.

The first thing I would suggest would be to get a cheap indoor/outdoor digital thermometer ($8 or so at Walmart or similar stores). Then put the probe right on the glass (under the substrate) above the UTH. My guess would be that the temp there is way above 80 if it is 80 on top of the substrate. This could be a problem if your snake ever decides to burrow, as he could get on the hot glass resulting in a burn.

Hi thanks!
I do have reptile carpet under the aspen substrate as well, so i hope burns won't be an issue! you were very helpful! thanks again!

No problem at all!
You're right, the carpet should help to dissipate some of the heat. Another trick, should you ever need it, is to mount the UTH to a tile or piece of glass. At least picture frame glass seems to work for me.

Welcome to the forums :wavey:

The snake will probably be able to get under the reptile carpet too. If its not stuck down.

I put some junk mail over my heat pad, under the tank. I may be tempting fate, but it dissipates heat very well.

And don't freak out about the snake being too cold just yet. My young snake spends most of his time in the cool 71-74 degree side of the tank.
