I was wondering how all of you record your temps in your corn enclosures. Do you test the ambient temperature or do you place the thermometer on the substrate.

Just interested because if you use a uth, the surface temp is very different than the ambient.

So which one do we try to keep around 85 F.

Any help would be appreciated and my apologies if the message is somewhat unclear!

I try to keep the substrate at 85 degrees because that is what the snake is actually coming into contact with. If you're using a bulb, however, it gets a bit more confusing. Heat mats heat by radiation (I think) so the air doesn't get heated, just the solid things. However, bulbs heat the whole place so you might as well have the thermometer an inch or two above the substrate to get the right temp reading for that level.
