Hi,

I am using a heat mat over about 1/3 of the vivarium floor. Its on a controller set at 85, the trouble is the temps at the cool side are between 65 and 70. Is that ok?

The snake eats and sheds fine.

It would help to know how large the cage is, but as long as the snake has room to thermoregulate and choose what temperature it wants to be at, then that sounds fine.
 
That still allows your snake to pick its temperature. Giving it hides in cool, medium, and warm areas will also help. When I added more hides I found my snake liked the cooler areas, before that she stayed towards the warm.
I kept track of the temps my snake stayed in and adjusted the warm side. When it was 85F on the warm side she did not stay there, only passed through when wandering. At 82-83F she uses the warm hide.
Observe your snake, it's interesting.
