tempreture

Enouth corns yet?
in my room it is really hot. my viva are normally around 26-27C but today when i checked it was going up to 30-31C.
ive turned my heatmats right down and the light off, is there anything else i can do, or should i totally unplug the heat mats all day? and plug them in at night? i think the bulbs are giving enouth heat, and with the mats on it gets hotetr

You can get a type of thermostat that turns on when a certain temperature is reached. These can be used to control mini fans to lower the temperature. I know Habistat do them and there may be other makes.

yeah, i have a thermomstat for both viv, im just going to leave lights off, but i did it today, i have the heat mats up and the temps only went to 23!!!!

I would just lower the heat mats slightly and that's it. One day or so isn't going to kill your corns. They are really quite tolerant. In actual fact corns can be kept at temperatures up to around 35C.

I'd be inclined to leave the lights off.

The mats are controlled by stats, which is great. But if the lights aren't controlled by a stat, then they will result in overheating - they're essentially an unregulated source of heat.

Corns don't really need artificial light if you have natural light in the room. I have spots in a couple of my tall vivs that help with the temp gradient in the upper levels through the winter. But this is the time of year I switch them off and they don't go back on again until about October (I'm in the UK as well).

If you just use the heat mats & their stats, then you will have complete control over the heat in the viv.

sorry to hijack the thread, but i wanted to ask bitsy where he/she got all the beautiful snakes from living in the north of england is rubbish i dont know of anywhere that does the differant types other than amels, normals and anerys

Hi Shorty - have PM'd you with some UK info!

How are things today nightmare? Ther weather's a bit cooler where I am today, so hopefully things are a bit more comfortable for your folks?

yeah, its coller here aswell!!!! got the lights back on and the tempretures are normal again... hmm typical english wheter isnt it, wet, lol, 2 hot days and its all gone!!!

Corn snakes fare well in a temperature range of 22-32C (72-90F). One end of the cage should be kept at the lower end of this range and the other should provide a focal hot spot at or slightly above 32C (90F). Providing such a thermal gradient allows snakes to regulate their body temperature precisely. Because wild corn snakes thermoregulate primarily by hiding beneath tree bark or surface debris that is warmed by the sun, an overhead heat source is preferred over under-cage heat sources. I also agree with DannyB, I have an auto thermostat that turns on when it gets to a certain temperature, maybe look into getting one of those (as long as it is in your price range)?
